![Edward Waters College was founded in 1866 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) for the education of newly freed slaves. Located near downtown Jacksonville, Florida, the college currently sits on 23 acres and houses Centennial Hall (a nationally registered historic structure), the school’s oldest building which was constructed in 1916. A historically black college, Edward Waters College is currently a private, Christian, liberal arts college, is the oldest black college in Florida. It is a member of the United Negro College Fund.

Edward Waters College initially opened its doors as Brown Theological Institute. The school was forced to close for most of the 1870s due to financial difficulties, but re-opened in 1883 with an extended educational program. It also adopted its current name which honors the third bishop of the AME church. The college was destroyed in Great (Jacksonville) Fire of 1901, the largest urban fire in southeast United States.  Three years later in 1904 the AME church began rebuilding the college. "I ended up leaving for a different hotel. This place is not sanitary by any means. It was dark, humid, and smelled like cigarette smoke. As soon as we opened the room door, there were German roaches everywhere. The pictures on the site are definitely not from the actual hotel. "

"The home is an absolute dream! It felt like I was sharing all of the nostalgia of visiting my grandparents' home as a child with my 21-year old son. He was taken aback with the history and splendor of it all. The record player and broad collection of vinyls were an unexpected delight, providing hours of entertainment while we relaxed as a family in the parlor. The fact that this home and all its interiors are made available for anyone to enjoy is truly a gift!The house is clean, the beds are impressively comfortable, and the upgraded HVAC systems allowed for complete comfort inside. It is well appointed with everything we needed to feel like a home away from home. I highly recommend dining at Othello less than a block away from the house, shopping for groceries & staples at Springfield Superette two blocks away, and exploring the revitalized Springfield Main Street district for food, entertainment & shops, also within walking district. Melody was very welcoming and responsive, and we can't thank her enough for providing this unexpected, added joy to our Jacksonville trip! "

We were in town for a Jaguar game, we were able to park at the hotel early, before check in time and take the water taxi, which is very close to the hotel, right over to the stadium.
