"This is a beautifully appointed cottage with everything you need for a comfortable stay. It's in a quiet location looking out onto a courtyard. Although there is no onsite parking, we had no trouble finding a parking space on the square. Visitors should also be aware that there is no outdoor seating area but we were out and about so this wasn't a problem for us. "Heating turned on at 20degrees but frankly when it’s minus 7 outside this was not enough. A fan in the bathroom would be good because it’s unreasonable to expect the window to be open when freezing outside. Shower was hard to adjust. A manual when you arrive would be a help too If you had 4 people in this house it would be too small. A simple double bed in the second bedroom would provide a bit more space to move around. Towel rail in the bathroom would be better if you could tirn it off and...

"What a great place this is, full of character warm and friendly atmosphere and the staff were great. It was always busy with people eating and the food we had on both evening's was very good and the waiting staff excellent, we had breakfast both morning's which again was very good the only down side was there was no fresh fruit available in the breakfast room ( we didn't inquire if this was an option though ) the pub is ideally located for everything and there is parking available but on a first come first served basis although there is plenty of parking elsewhere. All in all we had a great stay and will be back next time we visit Richmond, we would definitely recommend the black lion as a great place to stay for sure."

"We were hesitant to book over a weekend but were assured by the 11pm closing time that it wouldn't be too much of an issue; that wasn't the case. When we checked into the 'cosy country pub' we soon learned that the closing times listed online were not correct. We were told we were to pay when we check out, and were shown up to our room. At first the room seemed fine, if a little warm. First problem, the window didn't open. There was an inner double glazed unit which did open, but an outer sash window which didn't. The space between the two windows was THICK with mould, it clearly hadn't been cleaned in months. We soon discovered that the floor was filthy and the toilet seat was both loose, and clearly didn't fit (potentially dangerous). Despite this, we tried to make the most of it. To be fair the food and drinks we had were decent, can't fault that. Our room must have been directly above one of the speakers, I see other reviews describing a quiet stay but that is NOT our experience. Music was thumping until 12 on the Friday night, and 1:30 on the Saturday night. Not ideal in an already hot and stuffy room. Then came checking out. No staff anywhere, we called the pub, no use. We called the number provided by Expedia. No answer. We tried the emergency contact number provided in the room, who informed us she hasn't worked there for months. After 2 hours we got hold of the manager, who informed us payment is taken automatically when we check out. Honestly, can't recommend."

"The room we booked was clean and very pleasant but unfortunately overnight on the first day the toilet cistern developed a leak. Because it was a Sunday and they couldn't get a plumber to attend they helped us move into a beautiful 2 bedroom apartment with its own living room and kitchen at no extra charge. We were so impressed we have booked a similar one bedroom apartment at the Green Dragon at the beginning of September."

"Very little parking available and £10 per night. But on street parking a few minutes walk or 4pm to 10am on the square in front. Not a problem. Fabulous location, probably the best in Richmond town. Lovely characterful building. Pricy and breakfast extra. Greggs or Wetherspoons nearby! My issue was with a premium room, 205. One set of curtains couldn’t be opened or fully closed. And window couldn’t be opened due to lack of maintenance. Main problem was the mattress. Unbelievably bad. It was probably very soft when new but by now it was squashed to half its original thickness. Terrible sleep. I’ve had better mattresses in $10 Central American hostels. It’s 29 years since I last stayed and despite the staff denials the mattress felt like it had been in service for longer. Staff excuse ‘we don’t sleep here so didn’t know’. Not good enough. A simple room condition inspection would have identified that. Potentially great but do the maintenance. "

"A really good location to stop overnight and very happy with the room. Breakfast was delivered in a hamper box outside our room and was rather disappointing. No egg/cold meats option. The main option was oats with fruit. We ordered with banana and strawberry. Tiny amount of strawberry and the banana slices were dried and chewy. But the evening meal was good honest pub grub."

"Don't be put off when you enter the pub, it looks very old and needing lots of upgrades. Then there's the staff, you couldn't have a better reception than here. Our room was spotless and everything that you needed was in and if it wasn't you only had to ask. It was a hot day so we could sit in the beer garden, that too could have benefited from a tidy up but it didn't spoil having a drink or two, The included breakfast was spot on. All in all we had a great stay here and we would go back. We went to the old theatre and would say that if you haven't been inside you are missing a treat."
