Rider’s Roost at The Hideout at Palo Duro Canyon offers guests over 6 acres of peace and quietude, with the convenience of being right next to the state park, Jeeping tours and riding stables. Our old west experience includes farm animals and 19th century decor, with modern amenities. Included are a carport and a screened-in porch. None of our competitors offer this. Here you can relax and unwind in the true spirit of the old west! The Space: This is a barn-dominion. Our old west experience brings one back to a simpler time, complete with horses, a miniature goat, and Nigel, our rooster. A bottle of wine awaits, so you can relax and unwind in the peace and tranquillity this little hideout offers. Note: This is a horse stable on a small farm. Farm animals make funny sounds, smell bad and have sex outdoors. Unless you can tolerate noise, and outdoor sex, this rental may not be for you. We have only two rental cabins on the entire 6.5 acre property. No crowded resort cabin complexes. Rider’s Roost is a living quarters built within a horse stable: Upstairs has a 700 square foot room with 2 queen beds (extra roll away beds are available upon request), and a large living area with sofa, two recliners, a 46 inch Smart TV, and Netflix. Downstairs enjoy a 150 square foot saloon style kitchenette furnished with a table that seats 4, a microwave, coffee pot, microwave bacon tray, crockpot, toaster oven, ice machine, sink and mini fridge. A bottle of wine is our gift to you! Open the French doors to a 14x24 screened-in porch with large table, gliding sofa, 2 rocking chairs, large ice chest, propane fire pit and BBQ grill. We include one unused spare tank of propane. There is also a full bathroom with walk-in shower. All bathing necessities included! Texas panhandle weather can be unpredictable. We provide covered parking for protection of your vehicles (2 vehicles). Our screened in porch offers respite from summer flies during your BBQ. Our family owned business guarantees our guests a personal touch! Guest Access: Guests here enjoy over 6 acres of peace and quiet, with only one other rental cabin on the property ( See The Hideout at Palo Duro Canyon- Buffalo Lodge). If your party exceeds 4 people, please also rent The Hideout at Palo Duro Canyon- Buffalo Lodge, which sleeps 4 people. That way your larger group can stay together on our 6.5 acre property. We as hosts and owners of the property will frequently be on the property tending to the animals, watering trees, perhaps cleaning the other cabin on the property. Please note ONLY the number of guests booked can be on the property. Guests cannot have additional visitors. Guests having parties or events such as weddings will be fined and asked to leave immediately. No pets are allowed. Guests caught sneaking in pets will be fined and asked to leave immediately. No smoking or vaping inside. Guests will be charged if professional services are required to clean smoke/vaping inside. The Neighborhood: Rider’s Roost is located approximately 1.5 miles from the entrance to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Palo Duro Riding Stables, Palo Duro Creek Ranch Jeeping Tours, and Creek House Honey Farm. The musical drama TEXAS can be seen in the state park’s outdoor amphitheater June through mid August. We are 10 miles from the city of Canyon, home to WTAMU, and the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, which is the largest history museum in the state of Texas. There are some great restaurants on the town square, such as Canyon Ranch Steak House, Sayakamaryns and the Back 40. Pepitos Mexican Restaurant on 23rd St. is one of our favorite restaurants in town. Bar Z Winery is also nearby. It’s about a 30-minute drive to the city of Amarillo, home to The Big Texan Steak Ranch and the famous Cadillac Ranch (be sure to bring a can of spray paint). Getting Around: There is no public transportation. Other Things to Note: You may notice our horses wander through the red gate onto our neighbor’s 25 acres. That property is however off limits for our guests. Trespassing laws would be enforced. Please do not pet or feed the horses. Although they are friendly, the Texas Equine Inherent Risk Law prevails. By renting this property you release us of any or all liability associated with risks related to being around horses. Additionally, we sometimes have rescue horses with possible health issues that would make feeding them treats risky, such as swallowing disorders, digestive disorders (prone to colic), or tooth issues. Again, we want to stress, do not feed them. Thank you. Swimming in the pond is strictly prohibited. This property is subject to HOA rules and regulations. It is in a quiet zone. Therefore, no parties, events, or outside music is allowed. No outside fires allowed. We do have a propane fire pit on the screened-in porch for guest use. Music is ok on the porch as long as it’s not so loud it can be heard at the other cabin or by our neighbors. Due to the fact horses are on the property, the front entrance gate must remain closed at all times upon entering and exiting the property. The property is a no drone zone. Use of drones is expressly prohibited. We do not ship forgotten items. If you leave personal items behind, we will donate them to local charities. Again, please do not contact us asking us to ship your forgotten items. We do not accept 3rd party rentals. Only the party that books can be on property. You must be at least 25 years of age to book. We have a maximum occupancy of 4. No additional people allowed on the property at any time. Guests will be fined heavily for having parties or events such as weddings on the property. Interaction with Guests: Your Hosts, Andrea and John, live only 2 miles away and are available 24/7 to assist you. We arrive every morning to feed horses and muck stalls, then return in the evenings to put all the animals up for the night. We enjoy visiting with our guests, but also respect your privacy. ## Property amenities ### Internet - Available in the cabin: WiFi ### Parking and transportation - Onsite parking options include a garage ### Kitchen - Coffee/tea maker - Cookware, dishware, and utensils - Microwave - Oven - Refrigerator - Stovetop - Toaster ### Bedrooms - Bedroom - Bedsheets provided ### Bathroom - 1 bathroom - Hair dryer - Shower ### Entertainment - TV ### Outdoor areas - Balcony - Barbecue grill - Garden ### Laundry - Laundry facilities ### Work spaces - Office ### Comfort - Air conditioning - Heating ### Pets - No pets allowed ### Suitability/Accessibility - If you have requests for specific accessibility needs, please contact the property using the information on the reservation confirmation received after booking. - Area rugs in public areas - Handrails in stairways - Smooth flooring in public areas - Well-lit path to entrance - Smoking not allowed ### Services and conveniences - Change of bedsheets (on request) - Iron/ironing board ### Safety features - Carbon monoxide detector not reported (host has not indicated whether there is a carbon monoxide detector on the property; consider bringing a portable detector) - Smoke detector (host has indicated there is a smoke detector on the property) - First aid kit - Fire extinguisher ### General - Bed sheets changed on request - Garden - Humane treatment of captive wild animals - Local artist showcase - Locally-owned and organized tours and activities - Unit size: 1,100 square feet ## Similar properties ![Property grounds](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/91000000/90720000/90719200/90719182/82a2c956.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### The Aoudad Cabin at Palo Duro Canyon - Barbecue grill 10 Exceptional 78 reviews CA $181 CA $300 total includes taxes & fees Nov 15 - Nov 16 [](https://www.expedia.ca/Hotel-Search?startDate=2025-11-15&endDate=2025-11-16&selected=90719182&PinnedHotelID=90719182&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Fridge, microwave, oven, stovetop](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/20000000/19960000/19953600/19953579/64fe4647.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### The Hideout at Palo Duro Canyon - Buffalo Lodge. Andrea was very accomodating by allowing us to upgrade our cabin at no additional cost. She was also a very thoughtful host by providing special breakfast food and fixings for Mimosas. Since the snowfall on our first day restricted our activities, Andrea offered to let stay an extra night at no cost. The cabin was clean, cozy, well decorated and had a great heating system. In addition, Andrea provided us with very helpful guidance about local restaurants and other points of interest. She was a very good host, and we have already recommended her facilities to some of our friends. ##### Charles F. If there is ever a true "Texan" experience to be had this was the place. Being tucked away off the beaten path with horses and other ranch animals was just the escape we were looking for. The opportunity to stay in such a unique house (stable?) is hard to find and I am glad we did. Not only was it unique but also very well taken care of. We felt welcomed with a kitchen well stocked with all we would need to take of ourselves. The upstairs was very comfortable with a living room and beds at the opposite end. The tin roof was so cool looking and we really wanted rain so we could hear it as we slept but it was a quiet night. This is a one of a kind and wonderful place to stay and I hope are able to return when visiting the Palo Duro Canyon. ##### Brian S. Stayed 1 night in Jul 2021 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Shane A. Jul 10, 2025 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy Andrea is super nice and you can tell she's gone to a lot of trouble to have a lot of little extras. Place is really clean. Place is very close to park entrance and very close to a place to eat/buy supplies, you couldn't find a better location in terms of access to park and nearby attractions. The only issue we have is that the owners/hosts were there a lot, like most of the day for most of our stay. We certainly didn't have an issue with them being on their own property, but it's the fact that our only bathroom was in an area that was sort of communal with the barn. And since it's the only bathroom they can access (the one in the other cabin is within their locked doors, so they couldn't use that one), we thought they might need access to our bathroom and we didn't shower, etc. The bathroom also had the window cracked open when we arrived, so anyone near that window can hear whatever is going on in that bathroom. We thought we were going to have our own private bathroom and not one in a open area, that wasn't clear to us in the pics. ##### Dana W. Stayed 4 nights in Jul 2025 ### 10/10 Excellent #### G K. A mere 5 mins ride from the park, this place was an experience in itself. We decided to stay in the riders roost, which is a well stocked cozy space with bedroom upstairs and kitchen below. The horses and few other animals stay right next to the kitchen separated by a wall! The owner was super nice and friendly. Our stay was nothing short of magical, offering a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and culture. The property's three horses and two goats added a charming, rustic touch to our experience. It was a delight to see them daily, making us feel truly connected to nature. The stocked pond was a highlight, providing convenient access to many hours of fishing in the serene surroundings. The location couldn't have been better. Being so close to Palo Duro State Park allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty and activities the area has to offer. The off-road jeep adventure was exhilarating, giving us an adrenaline rush as we explored the rugged terrain. Horseback riding through the scenic trails was equally delightful, offering breathtaking views and a peaceful escape. One of the most memorable experiences was attending a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in the park's outdoor amphitheater. The natural backdrop of the canyon under the starlit sky made the performance truly enchanting. Overall, this property exceeded our expectations in every way. The combination of excellent amenities, beautiful surroundings, and prime location near Palo Duro State Park made for an unforgettable vacation. We can't wait to return! ##### Naomi L. Location was very close to Palo Duro Canyon, the scenic TX highway 207. We also went to Caprock Canyons and saw the Bison, a Roadrunner, and a Coyote. The Rider's Roost has sleeping quarters upstairs, kitchenette, nice shower/ toilet and a screened porch. We took our meals to the porch because it was cool and comfortable. There was plenty of room for the 4 of us. It is a very charming place, the boys helped feed the chickens and the catfish in the pond. We also got to eat fresh eggs from the chickens. It was everything I wished it to be. The only drawback was the moth ball's pungent smell. But they are necessary to ward off moths. After a while your nose acclimates to the smell. Andrea is a very kind and friendly host. ##### Valeria J. Stayed 3 nights in Jun 2024 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Richard H. Rider's Roost was a delightful place. The cabin was clean and cozy, just as described. We enjoyed being next to the barn and meeting the horses and the new goats, Pearl and Danny-boy. They were often under the carport greeting us when we returned from our excursions. The screened-in porch was perfect for an early morning coffee or a game of cards in the evening. Andrea included fresh chicken eggs and cream for our coffee. Her book collection on the area was so interesting. The guides and flyers were very helpful. The natural beauty of Palo Duro was majestic and it was wonderful being so close to the canyon. I would highly recommend Rider's Roost if you like animals, nature and a very quiet place to stay. Andrea is also a fabulous photographer and had some lovely cards for sale. An added bonus. Hope to return again! Thank you, Andrea. ##### Johanna B. Considering the Roost is part of a horse stable, it is very clean and comfortable! The downstairs has very limited seating in a smallish kitchen but makes up for it with a very nice screened in patio for relaxing. Where you can listen to the cackle of the chickens and the nickers of the horses The bedroom is upstairs with a nice sitting area for reading, writing or watching TV. But the bathroom is downstairs which provided a bit of a challenge at night. Also, when I say rustic, there are pelts of various creatures on the handrails which my wife found a little off putting when having to go downstairs to go to the bathroom. Didn't bother me but if you don't like stuffed animals in your living quarters, I suggest you find something else. ##### Michael W. Stayed 2 nights in Nov 2023 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Erik S. We took our daughter to Palo Duro Canyon for her birthday trip, but this cabin and the surrounding nature turned out to be the highlight of our trip! We absolutely loved the old west décor with all the modern accommodations, definitely a one of a kind experience! Our hostess was so kind, and went the extra mile to make our stay a happy family memory. ##### Erik S.
