Maine through the seasons

Spring

From birdsong to blooms, Maine’s woods and waters wake up in the spring, bringing excellent spring fishing, hiking in state parks and even skiing at resorts like Sugarloaf and Sunday River. If the weather turns blustery, head indoors to explore museums on the Maine Art Museum Trail or cultural events like the Indigenous Film Festival and Dawnland Festival.

The first flavors of the season are fresh and pure, straight from land and sea. Taste woodsy fiddlehead ferns, rich maple syrup, meaty mussels and tender asparagus. Seasonal restaurants and bars begin opening their doors in spring, welcoming back foodies.

Summer

Sun-drenched days at the beach and leisurely lake days set the pace of summer. Being on the water is a hallmark of the season. Sail on an authentic windjammer or go on a deep-sea fishing excursion. Paddle a canoe across quiet lakes or rush down the river on thrilling whitewater rapids. And then there’s hiking, biking, fishing and camping.

The flavors of summer are bright and bountiful. This is the season for wild blueberries, small-batch ice cream, jovial clam bakes and lobster rolls enjoyed by the waterfront. Peruse bustling farmers markets, small-town main streets and open maker studios.

Fall

Dramatic colors, shimmering waters and golden light set the scene for playing in fall leaves. Enjoy cool, crisp weather as you pedal a bike along coastal routes. Blaze through lush woodlands on exhilarating ATV trails or hike to waterfalls framed by changing foliage.

Meanwhile, the harvest season brings a bounty of fall flavors. Pick your own apples and sip freshly pressed cider at an orchard. Savor the day’s catch of crabs and oysters. And stop by a local farm to peruse squash, pumpkins, homemade jams and just-baked pies.
