Top The Rag Hotel Reviews

Horse and Jockey Hotel

Horse and Jockey Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"Overall, we had a great stay. The room was huge and the beds were very comfortable, although dated with furnishings. This wasn’t really an issue because it added to the overall charm of the place. The breakfast was amazing. Don’t even think of getting a package that doesn’t include breakfast. It was marvelous. We did have one rather uncomfortable experience with the attendants in the pool and gym area. We were just walking around, checking it out, fully dressed ( lol) …it was very obvious that we were hotel guests. My husband walked into the locker room so he could see what the pool was like closer up, and the attendant came running out and asked me out of breath if I saw the strange man that went into the pool area without checking in first… well no one was at the desk to check in so that was probably the first problem. I stared back at her and said , “Um that that’s my husband and we are hotel guest. He just wanted to see what the pool looked like up close. “ She screamed at me and told me that he didn’t have a swim cap and I said ‘ well he’s fully clothed so I’m pretty sure he’s not planning on jumping in the pool’ . She didn’t even apologize for her rude demeanor. That was the only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth …other than that the hotel is amazing."

This central area offers a pleasant base with a few local shops, traditional pubs, and eateries. You'll find accommodation options ranging from guesthouses to small hotels, often family-run, providing a friendly setting. The main road, the R691, runs through the village, making it straightforward to navigate to nearby attractions.

For families, staying in The Rag village or just outside it is ideal. Many accommodations here offer larger rooms or family suites. Being centrally located means shorter drives to popular family-friendly spots like the Rock of Cashel, and there are often open green spaces nearby for children to enjoy. The convenience of having pubs and restaurants within walking distance is also a plus for evening meals.

Couples looking for a peaceful escape will also appreciate the village and its immediate surroundings. You can enjoy quiet evenings, perhaps by a fireplace in a local pub, and easily access scenic walks and drives through the Tipperary countryside.
When is the best time to go to The Rag?
The best time to visit The Rag, County Tipperary, is typically during the spring and summer months, from April to September. This period offers the most pleasant weather conditions for exploring the region.

Spring, particularly May and June, brings milder temperatures and blooming landscapes, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking in the Slieve Bloom Mountains or exploring the Rock of Cashel without the peak summer crowds. You'll find the countryside is at its most verdant, superb for scenic drives and photography.

Summer, from July to August, offers the warmest weather, which is superb for enjoying the local lakes and rivers or attending outdoor events and festivals that often take place across County Tipperary. While it's the busiest time, the longer daylight hours allow for extended sightseeing and more relaxed evenings at local pubs and restaurants.
