Learn more about Tarara

Venture to Purakaunui Falls and Catlins Lake—just two of the sights around Tarara.

The Purakaunui Falls are one of the most beautiful waterfalls in New Zealand outside the mountains. Down in the Catlins it's off a gravel road past Papatowai. It's a bit hard to find online or concretely on a map, but there are yellow street signs everywhere pointing you there, so just follow the yellow signs and you'll get there, then its a quick 20 minute walk down to the falls

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Tarara?
The best area to stay in Tarara is the town centre, particularly around Tarara Main Street, for its convenience and access to amenities.

This central area is the heart of Tarara, offering easy access to most of the town's shops, cafes, and restaurants. Tarara Main Street is a hub of activity, where you'll find local boutiques and eateries, and it's also where many of the tours and activities depart from. The riverfront promenade is just a short walk from here, providing pleasant views and walking paths.

Couples looking for a comfortable and convenient base will find this area ideal. You'll be within walking distance of most dining options, from casual bistros to more upscale restaurants, superb for a relaxed evening out. Many hotels in this area also offer excellent views of the surrounding mountains and the Tarara River.

For travellers planning to explore the wider Otago region, staying in the town centre is also practical. Its central location means you're well-placed for day trips, with easy access to major roads and local tour operators.
When is the best time to go to Tarara?
The best time to visit Tarara is during the summer months, from December to February, when the weather is warm and sunny, great for outdoor activities.

During this period, you can expect long daylight hours and pleasant temperatures, making it ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the Otago region. Many of the local vineyards are in full swing, offering tours and tastings, and the walking and cycling trails are at their most inviting. This is also a popular time for water sports on Lake Tarara.

For those who prefer a slightly quieter experience with still excellent weather, the shoulder seasons of autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are also fantastic. Autumn brings stunning foliage colours to the landscape, particularly around the Bannockburn and Cromwell areas, and the grape harvest season is a special time to visit the wineries.
