Enjoy scenic walks and elevated views of the city. Walk to the top of Tiscapa Hill to get a closer look at the towering Monumento a Sandino. The 59-feet (18-meter) high steel statue can be seen from many parts of Managua and is dedicated to Augusto Cesar Sandino, one of Nicaragua’s most famous revolutionaries. The monument was erected in 1990 and is situated in the Parque Historico Nacional Loma de Tiscapa. This is where the former Presidential Palace stood before the 1972 earthquake and where Sandino and some of his followers were executed in 1934\. The revered national hero had led a rebellion against the occupation of Nicaragua by the United States. Note how the statue’s sculptor has added little detail beyond the hatted silhouetted figure of the freedom fighter. Learn more about Sandino by reading the plaques at the foot of the monument. While you are here, look at the ruins of the palace and see a tank that was a present from Benito Mussolini to Anastasio Somoza, a former Nicaraguan dictator. The Monumento a Sandino sits on one of the highest points of Managua, a volcanic hill above Tiscapa Lagoon. From here, enjoy lofty views of the lake and the city. See if you can pinpoint Managua’s two cathedrals. On your way back down, stop by the Roosevelt Monument at the base of the hill. Originally designed as a tribute to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, it is now dedicated to martyrs of the Nicaraguan Revolution. Explore the walking trails that form part of the nature reserve around the lagoon. Adrenaline junkies will want to take a canopy ride over the lagoon. The Monumento a Sandino is situated on the outskirts of Managua, about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) south of the old Managua Cathedral (Catedral de Santiago), which is in the historic center. (187 reviews) Very walkable location, central to lots of food/things to do. The hotel itself is beautiful and very clean, with super nice and accommodating staff (Issac is the best!). The pool is pretty small, definitely not for swimming and mostly just for lounging/kids. The restaurant is a bit pricey but the food is so delicious it’s worth it! Still dreaming of their chicken alfredo. Sadly our trip was cut short and we only stayed one night instead of two, the hotel doesn’t allow refunds, but we would definitely stay again and were sad we missed our second night! (The laundry service was also super articulate for how inexpensive it was - around $15USD for an entire laundry bag full). (133 reviews) Pros: beautiful property in the middle of the jungle, private beach, and delicious food at the restaurant. They were very kind to upgrade our room close to the beach. It was a beautiful 2-story villa with a kitchen, private pool, a balcony, and AC in the bedroom. Cons: lack of honesty and services Leading up to the trip, we received a few emails telling us about all the activities and services available in the resort. They offered complementary hiking and snorkeling, and we could pay for yoga classes, spa treatments, romantic packages, and activities such as surfing, hikes on Mombacho and Omepete island, etc. None of that was available once we got there. We asked the reception to book activities and they said they would call amd organize them. They never did. After a few days, we decided to book them ourselves through tour websites. We even asked them to call a nearby golfing course and they said they would. After 3 days, they said the golf course hadn't answered yet. My partner emailed the golf course and we got a response within 5 minutes. The staff at the reception were very kind, but not helpful and the lack of honestly from the management really disappointed us. The restaurant staff were always great and the service was excellent. The reception even gave us the wrong opening hours for the restaurant so we showed up late one evening. The staff were still there and were so extremely kind to prepare us a meal even after closing.
