Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Shimohara?
The best area to stay in Shimohara is the central Shimohara village, particularly around the Shimohara Onsen area.

This village is the heart of Shimohara, located in the Hida mountains. It's home to the area's main attractions, including the natural hot springs (onsen) that Shimohara is famous for. The Hida River runs through the village, offering scenic views and opportunities for activities like fishing. The main road, Route 41, provides easy access through the village.

Couples looking for a relaxing retreat will find the Shimohara Onsen area particularly appealing. Many traditional ryokans (Japanese inns) here offer private onsen baths, allowing for an intimate and tranquil experience. The focus is on relaxation, fine Japanese cuisine, and enjoying the natural beauty of the surroundings.

For those interested in local culture and outdoor activities, staying within the main village provides convenient access to the walking trails along the Hida River and local craft shops.
When is the best time to go to Shimohara?
The best time to go to Shimohara is during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) for pleasant weather and beautiful scenery.

Spring in Shimohara offers mild temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities like exploring the area's natural beauty. The cherry blossoms typically bloom in late March to early April, adding a picturesque touch to the landscape. This season is particularly good for travellers who enjoy hiking and seeing nature in full bloom.

Autumn provides comfortable, cooler weather and stunning foliage as the leaves change colour, especially along the Hida River. This season is great for couples looking for a romantic getaway, with opportunities to enjoy scenic drives and quieter walks through the countryside.
