The best area to stay in Oude Willem is generally within the village itself or in the immediate surrounding countryside, particularly for those seeking a tranquil retreat close to nature.

The village of Oude Willem is quite small, characterised by a collection of traditional farmhouses and a few modern, well-appointed holiday homes. It's located directly beside the Drents-Friese Wold National Park, meaning you're just steps away from extensive walking and cycling trails. The main "street" is more of a quiet country lane connecting the properties, offering a very peaceful setting.

Couples looking for a romantic escape will find Oude Willem ideal. The focus here is on relaxation and connecting with nature. You can enjoy long walks or bike rides through the national park, spotting local wildlife, or simply unwind in a comfortable holiday home with views of the fields or forests. The quiet evenings are great for enjoying each other's company without distractions.

For families with older children who appreciate outdoor activities, staying in Oude Willem also offers excellent opportunities. The proximity to the national park means children can explore the woods, cycle for miles on designated paths, or even go horse riding at nearby stables.

The best time to visit Oude Willem is during the warmer months, specifically from May to September, when the weather is most pleasant for outdoor activities.

During these months, the average temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 15°C to 22°C. This period offers the most sunshine and the least amount of rain, making it ideal for exploring the surrounding Dwingelderveld National Park and the Drents-Friese Wold National Park. You'll find the heathlands in full bloom, especially in August and September, painting the landscape in beautiful purple hues.

Couples looking for a relaxing escape will particularly enjoy late spring and early autumn. The crowds are typically smaller than in peak summer, allowing for more peaceful walks and bike rides through the natural reserves. The extended daylight hours in May and June also mean more time to enjoy the countryside.

Families travelling with children will find July and August superb for their holidays. The warmer weather is great for picnics and outdoor play, and many local attractions may have extended opening hours or special events during the school holidays.
