Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Midlands?
The best area to stay in Midlands is primarily Curepipe, with some excellent options also available in Floreal.

Curepipe is the main town in Midlands, known for its cooler climate due to its higher altitude. It's a well-established residential and commercial hub, offering a good selection of shops, restaurants, and local markets. The town centre is quite compact, with the Royal College Curepipe and the Carnegie Library being prominent landmarks. It also has a botanical garden, the Curepipe Botanic Gardens, which offers a pleasant green space for a stroll.

For travellers looking for a convenient base for exploring the central plateau and its attractions, Curepipe is an excellent choice. Its central location makes it easy to access places like Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), Black River Gorges National Park, and the tea plantations further south. It's also well-connected by road to other parts of the island, making day trips straightforward.

Floreal, just north of Curepipe, offers a more residential feel with larger homes and some luxury hotels. It's known for its pleasant, tree-lined streets and a more relaxed pace. This area is particularly appealing to those seeking a quieter retreat while still being close to Curepipe's amenities.
When is the best time to go to Midlands?
The best time to visit Midlands, Plaines Wilhems, Mauritius is generally during the drier, cooler months between May and December.

This period avoids the peak cyclone season and high humidity, offering more comfortable weather for exploring. While Midlands is known for its cooler temperatures due to its elevation, these months provide the most pleasant conditions for outdoor activities and travel around the island.

For those looking to enjoy hiking or exploring the natural parks, the months of September to November are particularly good. The rainfall is typically lower, and the temperatures are mild, making it ideal for spending time outdoors.

If you're planning a trip that combines the cooler climate of Midlands with coastal excursions, May to June offers a nice balance.
