![Le Pont-Chrétien-Chabenet (Indre). Château de Chabenet. L'imposant château de Chabenet domine la vallée de la Bouzanne. Le château de Chabenet est un lieu de mémoire du protestantisme en Berry. Le château a été construit pour Josselin Du Bois*, chambellan de Louis XI et seigneur de Montmorillon durant la deuxième partie du 15ème siècle. Dès 1463, Josselin du Bois est mentionné comme seigneur de Chabenet; la construction du château fut achevée vers 1471. Il jouera un rôle important dans les luttes qui opposèrent Louis XI aux grands féodaux: les Armagnac, dont le duc de Nemours et les Bourbons.
 Vers1480, le château est alors entouré de fossés larges de 8 toises (15,50 m). Il comprenait alors 14 tours et un donjon. Josselin du Bois aura une dizaine d'enfant de trois unions dont François, issu de la troisième, seigneur de Chabenet (décédé vers 1530), qui épousa Jeanne Brachet. Son fils, Jean du Bois dit "le Rouge"*, dissipa la fortune familiale et fut fréquemment emprisonné; notamment à la conciergerie du Palais. En 1544, Jean Du Bois,"le rouge", petit fils de Josselin, enlève la fille du procureur des causes royales de Poitiers. Il est condamné à mort et se réfugie chez Aubert de Montjohan qui le cache. Profitant de la situation celui-ci acquiert le château. Jean du Bois, "le Rouge", céda donc le château en 1544 à Aubert de Montjohan. La fille d'Aubert de Montjohan, Catherine, deuxième épouse du huguenot Jean de Pons, seigneur de Plassac, cousin d'Henri IV, chambellan et conseiller d'Etat du roi de Navarre, l'apporta ainsi à son mari. Le mobilier de la chapelle et le contenu de la bibliothèque laissent supposer qu'Aubert de Montjohan était déjà acquis aux idées de la Réforme. Cette lignée se poursuivit par Anne de Pons qui se maria trois fois et apporta successivement ses biens berrichons et Chabenet à ses trois époux, tous des Pierrebuffière. Le dernier de ses enfants, Charles de Pierrebuffière, proche de Gaston d'Orléans, mourra huguenot. Son arrière-petit-fils, Charles-Benjamin de Pierrebuffière, abjurera le protestantisme en 1685 à l'âge de 12 ans mais sa mère Catherine de Couraud, déjà veuve, maintiendra la foi protestante au château de Chabenet jusqu'à sa mort en 1735. Pendant les guerres de religion, il appartient à la maison protestante Pierre de Buffiere. Ce château reste propriété protestante de 1585 à 1735. Pris par la Ligue, puis reconquis par Henri de Navarre, le château de Chabenet fut étroitement associé à l'histoire du protestantisme berrichon de la région d'Argenton- sur-Creuse, place de sûreté accordée aux protestants par l'Edit de Nantes. Cette place se rendit au Roi en 1620 et, l'exercice public du culte y ayant été supprimé, Chabenet accueillit dorénavant les fidèles des environs. En 1635,ses défenses furent partiellement démantelées par Richelieu à la suite de l'Edit d'Alès*, mais plusieurs de ses tours, dont le donjon, gardent encore leurs charpentes d'origine, L'histoire protestante du château se clôturera en 1735 avec l'abjuration de la dame de Chabenet, Catherine de Couraud, obtenue sur son lit de mort à l'âge de 94 ans. Par la suite, et au travers de filiations féminines, Chabenet passera au marquis d'Asnières, au comte de Poix* puis à Joséphine de Boisé de Courcenay, décédée en 1924, dernière propriétaire descendant d'Aubert de Montjohan. Vendu comme bien d’émigré en 1793, il est racheté en 1803 par la famille de Poix. Louis Thomas Benjamin Comte de Poix le fait restaurer en 1850 puis le lègue à sa filleule Joséphine de Boisé. Ce domaine de près de 2 000 hectares qui va de Chabenet à la Rocherolles est acheté par M. Leclerc (charcutier), puis, en 1940 par M. Willeme* (industriel). M. Billon (Années 1970 : enduction plastique), M. Marek (années 1980 : école de langues) qui le restaura, M. Petrau (années 1990 : produits paramédicaux) et enfin Hapymag (années 2000 : séjours de vacances Le bruit a couru, en 1996, que Michael Jackson aurait racheté le château de Chabenet, il semble que ce fut un canular. Quoi qu'il en soit, le château est actuellement propriété de la société de loisirs et vacances Hapimag. Hapimag est une société par actions dont les actionnaires ne reçoivent pas de dividendes, mais un droit de jouissance des propriétés. Josselin du Bois fut un fidèle du roi Louis XI qui avait apprécié ses services pendant son exil en Brabant. Après son accession au trône, en 1461, il le nomma capitaine de Montmorillon, maréchal de ses logis et bailli des Montagnes d'Auvergne et lui fit très autoritairement épouser en deuxièmes noces Anne Asse, de riche et noble lignée. Josselin du Bois était alors veuf d'une première union sans doute non noble. Après la mort de Louis XI et celle d'Anne Asse, Josselin du Bois se remariera en 1486 avec Marguerite de Pérusse des Cars, veuve descendant d'une très ancienne lignée. Il décédera en 1498. Jean du Bois dit "le Rouge" aurait été surnommé le Rouge à cause d'un manteau rouge qu'il portait : "XXIII. Et en l'an auparavant, le Seigneur de Pringe, Aubert de Montjehan, sieur dudit Langon, bailla ledit Langon en échange à un gentilhomme du Berry, nommé Jean Dubois, dit le Rouge, à cause d'un manteau rouge qu'il portoit. Les autres l'appeloient de Chabenet, et lequel lieu de Chabenet demeura en contre-échange audit Sieur de Pringe. Et durant que ledit Dubois étoit Seigneur dudit Langon, lui et ledit François Suzenet, Seigneur du Bois-Lambert, firent échange. C'est pourquoi tout le droit du grand four demeura audit Dubois et tout le droit de terragerie demeura audit Suzenet et trois septiers et demi qu'il bailloit annuellement au Seigneur de Langon. Et lequel Seigneur de Langon nommé Jean Dubois , ne posséda qu'un an ou deux le Langon et, quant à ses moeurs et conversation, je me tais......" (Archives historiques du Bas-Poitou - Chroniques fontenaisiennes - Fontennay-le-Comte - 1841 - pp45 et 46) Édit de grâce d'Alès (28 juin 1629) : Après avoir vaincu les protestants à La Rochelle, Louis XIII publie l'édit de grâce d'Alès qui oblige les protestants du royaume à renoncer à leurs places de sûreté et au droit de tenir des assemblées. Willème est une marque française de camions. Créée après la Première Guerre mondiale en 1919 à Nanterre, la marque disparaîtra en 1960. Louis-François-Vincent, comte de Poix, Seigneur de Marécreux de la Noühe, de la Barre en Ciron, lieutenant-colonel d'infanterie, Chevalier de St Louis. Il épousa en 1769, Elisabeth de Pierre Buffière, dame de Chabenet. Il fût emprisonné pendant la Révolution à Châteauroux et mourut en 1814, au château de Marécreux. De cette union, il aura: Thomas-Louis-Benjamin, Baron de Poix, Chevalier de Malte en 1773 puis époux à Paris le 27 novembre 1810 de Joséphine d'Andigné de la Châsse. Les deux moururent au château de Chabenet après avoir eu : Louis-Thomas Benjamin, comte de Poix, Châtelain de Chabenet, mort sans alliance en 1878 et Marie-Louise-Léontine de Poix, qui épousa le Comte Stanislas de Boisé de Courcenay. De cette dernière union , naquit, vers 1840,Joséphine de Boisé, qui devint ainsi l'héritière du château de Chabenet, à la mort de son oncle.Elle même mourut à l'âge de 84 ans sans héritiers directs. Sa succession fera l'objet d' un contentieux juridique dont la presse se fera l'écho. (H. Alain Brissaud a achevé en 1996 une importante étude sur Josselin du Bois et le château de Chabenet intitulée "Six siècles à Chabenet".
