Ce pont doit être, en France, le seul ouvrage en bois entièrement couvert (le pont couvert moderne de Saint-Gervais-sous-Meymont reste une exception, il n'est pas fermé sur les côtés). Classé monument historique le 20 juillet 1992, son édification a été autorisée par la préfecture de l’Indre en 1855 suite à une demande du Comte de Poix, seigneur de Chabenet. Le pont a été restauré en 2001. Selon la version locale, le pont couvert aurait été bâti, entre 1847 et 1854, lors de la construction du tronçon Châteauroux/Argenton-sur-Creuse du chemin de fer du Centre (ligne Paris-Toulouse), pour permettre aux ouvriers italiens travaillant au percemement du tunnel et au chemin du viaduc des Roches, de franchir quotidiennement la Bouzanne. La traversée de la Bouzanne, effectuée jusque là en barque, avait coûté le vie à neuf d'entre eux le 20 avril 1847, leur embarcation ayant été emportée par une crue. En outre la couverture du pont offrait un abri pour le repas des ouvriers. Selon une autre version, le pont aurait été construit vers 1860 par le comte de Poix pour desservir ses domaines. Le tronçon Châteauroux-Limoges de la ligne Paris-Toulouse sera confié au jeune ingénieur Jules Carvallo*, né en 1820 au sein d'une famille d'origine juive portugaise. Peu de temps après sa sortie des Écoles polytechnique et des ponts et chaussées, Il doit donc superviser la réalisation du tunnel des Roches et le viaduc enjambant la Bouzanne*. Il va être confronté à la dure réalité du terrain. "Les chantiers de chemins de fer avaient la réputation d'être ingérables. Ils réunissaient un nombre impressionnant d'ouvriers, de corps de métiers et de provenances géographiques. Les conditions de vie et de travail y étaient en outre épouvantables. C'est pourquoi les bagarres étaient quotidiennes et d'une grande violence." (Léandre Boizeau*) Jules Carvallo, qui n'a pas encore 30 ans, sera donc confronté à la noyade des neuf ouvriers qui traversaient la Bouzanne en crue, il devra également s'interposer, armé, à des ouvriers grévistes, il sera même accusé d'actes crapuleux. Après ce séjour mouvementé au Pont-Chrétien de1845 à 1852, l'homme est devenu "influent, respectable et respecté." Les difficultés de Carvallo s'inscrivent dans une période, par ailleurs plutôt tragique dans la région, avec les émeutes de Buzançais. Dans les campagnes de l’Indre, durant l'hiver de 1846/1847, la maladie de la pomme de terre, la spéculation sur le blé et le chômage saisonnier aggravent les conditions de vie très précaires du petit peuple des villages, journaliers agricoles et artisans. On se révolte contre les profiteurs, les usuriers, les propriétaires. La “Jacquerie de Buzançais*” restera l'affaire la plus considérable, mais ce ne sera pas la seule, 35 localités de l'Indre veront des émeutes. La radicalité des actions et la dureté de la répression, provoquent la réaction de personnalités, comme George Sand*, Gustave Flaubert, Victor Hugo, ou encore Karl Marx*. Le trajet aurait pu, sans doute, être plus simple et moins coûteux, mais on peut penser que le Comte De Poix, important actionnaire des chemins de fer d’Orléans, a fait revoir le tracé pour qu’il évite ses vignes et son château. Son wagon spécialement aménagé était stationné en gare de Chabenet. Léandre Boizeau, instituteur dans l'Indre, l'un des membres fondateurs du magazine saisonnier (plus quelques numéros spéciaux) berrichon, la Bouinotte. Jules Carvallo (1820-1915), publiera une "étude sur la Stabilité des voûtes" en 1853. En 1860, il sera l'un des six signataires de l'appel fondateur de "l'Alliance Israélite universelle". Cette fondation est une conséquence de l'affaire de Damas (suite de la disparition d’un moine franciscain à Damas, des Juifs de la ville, accusés de crime rituel, sont arrêtés et torturés ; certains meurent), et de l'affaire Mortara. (Edgardo Mortara, né en 1851 dans une famille juive de Bologne, est enlevé par les autorités papales car il avait été baptisé à l’âge d’un an par la servante catholique de la famille. Il n’est jamais rendu à sa famille et devient même prêtre). Au cours d'une émeute à Buzançais, initiée par le vol d'un convoi de blé - 1060 décalitres - motivé par la famine, entre le 13 et le 15 janvier 1847, des émeutiers tentent d'assassiner le meunier Cloquemin et les propriétaires Brillant et Gaulin après avoir pillé leurs maisons. Enfin, battent à coups de bâton, de fourche et de sabots M.Huard-Chambert, propriétaire bourgeois qui avait tiré pour se défendre sur Venin, chef des émeutiers, l'abattant net. 26 accusés seront jugés par la Cour d'assise de l'Indre (le jury a été recruté chez les propriétaires, on écartera le seul juré qui serait "hostile" au gouvernement) pour "pillage, assassinat, tentatives d'assassinat et d'incendie". Les avocats des émeutiers, maîtres Protade-Martinet et Rollinat, (le père de l’écrivain Maurice Rollinat) mettent en avant la misère du peuple dans son ensemble : « Le peuple ne sait, ne voit qu’une seule chose, c’est qu’on emporte au loin le blé, sa seule nourriture », « Les accusés n’ont été que des instruments qui ont exécuté une sentence prononcée par la multitude ». Le 4 mars 1847, Baptiste Bienvenu, Louis Michot et François Velluet, seront condamnés à mort par le tribunal de Châteauroux, quatre aux travaux forcés à perpétuité, les dix-huit autres à des peines plus ou moins fortes, et à l'exposition publique sur la place de Buzançais, un seul sera acquitté (Bezard). Baptiste Bienvenu, Louis Michot et François Velluet seront guillotinés en place publique, à Buzançais, le 16 avril 1847. Les trois guillotinés du 16 avril, sont : - Louis Michot, 20 ans, ouvrier sabotier, célibataire, hab. Châteauroux, rue des Ponts. - François Velluet, 37 ans, garde particulier, marié 4 enf., hab Bonneau commune de Sainte-Gemme. - Baptiste Bienvenu, 25 ans, journalier, célibataire, hab. Buzançais. George Sand écrit à son cousin en février 1847 "C’est affreux, et entre ceux qui vont comparaître aux assises et ceux qui vont les accuser, je ne sais trop lesquels ont mérité les galères". "La maladie de la pomme de terre et les mauvaises récoltes de 1845 et de 1846 accentuèrent l'effervescence générale dans le peuple. La chambre : poignée d'entrée déformée à l'extérieur à force de tirer dessus pour assurer la fermeture de la porte, odeur de canalisation dans la douche, lit qui grince et fenêtre qui ne ferme pas complètement (pas de verrouillage possible), manque aussi un torchon pour essuyer la vaisselle mise à disposition (suffisante). "I have stayed at this hotel several times and I have never found a speck of dust or a marked or unclean surface. I have always enjoyed a good undisturbed sleep. The staff are very helpful and even uncorked some wine for me. Its location is fantastic, just off the n20/a20\. Free parking and free strong Wi-Fi. It is next to a retail park , cheap fuel available at carrefour. There are several fast food restaurants nearby. It’s a real bargain "
