Benefitting from stunning views of Funchal and sea, rooms are large, light and luxurious and the surrounding gardens abundant with palm trees, camellias, scented climbers, avocado trees and dazzling bougainvillea. Like most traditional villas in Funchal, the house sits peacefully on the hillside on the Caminho do Monte below the famous wicker toboggan run, with breathtaking views over its own heated swimming pool to the town and bay of Funchal with sea beyond. Owner Joy, a Madeira resident for over 30 years, offers this villa to those wanting quiet surroundings, stunning views over the bay of Funchal and perfect location, where the famous Monte toboggan run ends. Large terraces in the spacious gardens and around the pool are ideal for sun worshippers or, should you prefer, there is plenty of shade from a variety of trees. The gardens/terraces are furnished with sun beds, chairs, tables, parasols and a Weber BBQ. A conservatory entrance leads to a dignified lounge and dining area, with open log fire for winter evenings and French windows opening on to the gardens and heated pool. The kitchen/breakfast room, with laundry room behind, leads to a BBQ area and shower/WC for use after swimming or sunbathing. Upstairs are 3 bedrooms; 1 double en-suite, 1 double and 1 twin and a second bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped with a breakfast table for 6 and gas hob, electric oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave oven, coffee machine, toaster, cafetière, plus crockery, cutlery, glassware and cooking/serving utensils. At the Eastern end of the garden in an elevated position is the Studio Annexe, for 2 additional people. Only rented with the main villa, it has its own separate entrance from the gardens. A living area with those superb views over Funchal is complemented by a kitchenette – ideal for preparing breakfast or a quick daytime snack. A king-size double bed and shower room completes this beautifully appointed studio. The Studio Annexe is only made available when the Quinta d'Alegria is occupied by more than 6 people; should a booking for less than 6 people wish to use the Annexe, the rental rate for 7 people will be applicable. The Studio Annexe is only for adults (under 18 not allowed). At the far end, handy for the kitchen, a traditional dining table with chairs has seating for 8. Kitchen: Fully equipped open plan modern kitchen and breakfast room, with 4-ring induction hob, built-in oven and microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, kettle, coffeemaker, toaster, handheld liquidizer and a table and chairs for 6. Studio Annexe In the grounds and separate from the main villa. Open plan siting area with wall-mounted TV, dining table, kitchenette, king-size bed and shower room, panoramic sea-view. Kitchenette with a two ring electric hob, undercounter fridge, micro-wave, kettle, coffee maker and toaster, ideal for making a light breakfast or quick snack, not for main meals. The Studio Annexe is only made available when the Quinta d'Alegria is occupied by more than 6 people; should a booking for less than 6 people wish to use the Annexe, the rental rate for 7 people will be applicable. Swimming pool dimensions Shape: Rectangular Length: 8,40m Width: 4,2m Depth: from 1,00m to 2,10m Swimming pool heating: Pool heating is optional and costs 140,00€ per week for a setting of 24ºC, paid in cash on arrival. A supplement of 30,00€ per week applies for each additional degree up to a maximum of 26ºC Pool heating should be requested at least one week in advance. Should it be requested after arrival at the villa, the minimum charge applicable is one week, which is payable from the time the heating is turned on. Nearby Five minutes' walk from the villa is a bakery with café bar that makes fresh bread. There are a couple of simple restaurants within walking distance. Funchal centre and harbor is 3km (20 minutes walk downhill to Funchal (centre) but there is a regular bus service and the bus stop is just a few metres from the house. Madeira Some seven hundred kilometres west of the African coast, Madeira is a stunning mountainous emerald island, lapped by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. The first island to be discovered by the Portuguese navigators in 1419, Madeira became an important resting place on the long trip to the new world. From these humble beginnings, the holiday trade was formed and this spectacular island, which used to be the favourite place of the rich and famous, is now the preferred choice of all sorts of visitors, from those seeking year-round warm temperatures to nature lovers and sightseers, sports and active enthusiasts of all ages. Culture, history, stunning nature, a myriad of sea and land activities, added to a great foodie scene means Madeira has something for everyone. No matter where you go on the island you are rewarded by fabulous scenery, tiny villages and friendly people. With a population of over 100,000, Funchal is not only the capital, but also the 'heart' of Madeira and home to many of the islanders. This makes it a busy, chic, cosmopolitan and fun city, full of shops, shopping centres, bars, cafés and a great variety of restaurants and entertainment; a vibrant, cosmopolitan town where historic splendour and breath-taking natural beauty combine with a thoroughly modern atmosphere. All linen is provided, including towels for the swimming pool. Parking garage for one small car and private parking space for a second small car. Please note the access to both is narrow, and we would therefore recommend only small cars use these parking facilities. Cleaning The property is prepared for your arrival. For stays of longer than 7 nights, a change of linen and towels, and light mid-stay cleaning of bathrooms is provided on a day and time to be advised at check-in. All linen and towels are provided. For health reasons, linen for a baby cot is not provided and you should bring your own. Guests need to vacate the villa during a mid-stay clean and change of linen. Booking notes The rental value varies with the number of people occupying the property, so please ensure you enter the correct dates, number of adults, children and infants. Please note that supplements apply should additional people join you for any length of time. To secure your reservation we require a 30% deposit, or the full amount if you are arriving within 8 weeks. The balance is due 8 weeks prior to arrival. A security deposit of 250€ is required, payable in cash on arrival. Final details for check-in and driving instructions to the property will be sent 7 days prior to arrival. A contact number will be provided, and to be able to access the property, you need to phone this number as you are leaving the airport. We were able to look down on the firework display from the Atlantic Festival which was on in Funchal during the week of our stay. Some of us completed the Levada Moinho and Levada Nova circuit and the high level mountain traverse between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo whilst others took part in dolphin and whale watching of the coast. Close enough to Funchal centre to walk in down the very steep road and in a very quiet residential area. The bakery which is 5 minutes walk was a morning ritual for coffee and pastel de nata for breakfast. A mini supermarket only 15 minutes walk. The fridge and cleaning cupboards had a few supplies and a small supply of toiletpaper when we arrived which was a real bonus. Joy and her husband were delightful hosts - there if we needed their advice and good communication on arrival and departure. I would recommend this villa to everyone. ##### Angie Y. Joy was at the villa to receive us, showed us around and made us feel very welcome. The villa itself is impressively well renovated, spacious, well furnished and full of history. The views of Funchal are fantastic. The amenities are excellent and we made use of the heated pool and BBQ. We had a car in order to explore, but Uber is operational on the island and is a very reasonable service. The drivers were more than happy to have a chat about the local area. Funchal is not the easiest city to drive around yourself, as the roads are very narrow! I’d highly recommend staying at Quinta D'Alegria. The whole family loved it. ##### Christian H. This is a lovingly restored house with a very beautiful, functional garden with swimming pool and the added bonus of THAT VIEW. We loved living amongst the locals who were very friendly and welcoming. Our age range was 14 years to 76 years and we all coped with the challenge of the steep roads. A massive thank you to Joy and all her staff for looking after us so well - we wanted for nothing. The generous welcome pack was much appreciated. We received a warm welcome from Ciseltina the housekeeper as Joy was away when we arrived, but it was nice to meet her at the end of our holiday.
