About this property

The Old Post Office, Higham

  • Located in Higham, in the heart of Dedham Vale, The Old Post Office is a charming 17th-century timber-framed cottage immortalised in John Constable's painting, The Stour Valley. Sleeping eight across four bedrooms, including a separate annexe, it features exposed beams, oak floors and a cosy fireplace. Perfect for families and groups, with one well-behaved dog welcome, it's an idyllic base for exploring Suffolk's beautiful countryside.

Dating from the 1600s, this beautifully characterful Suffolk cottage is rich in original feature. Step inside, the well-equipped kitchen with large range-style cooker and American style fridge freezer, to the beautifully beamed sitting room where a wood burning stove sits within an original fireplace and invites slow evenings together. A dining room, styled with curated pieces and seating for eight, sets the scene for shared meals and long conversation, while a separate family room offers a quieter retreat for reading or relaxed moments away from the main living spaces. Upstairs, three of the four bedrooms are arranged across the first floor, where original flooring and soft character details continue the sense of heritage throughout. The master bedroom features a 5' King-size bed with access through to bedroom two, which also offers a 5' King-size bed and built-in storage, while bedroom three provides a 4'6” double bed. A family bathroom with bath and overhead shower serves these rooms, while a fourth 5' King-size bedroom sits in a separate annexe overlooking the garden, complete with en-suite shower room, creating a peaceful and private space for guests seeking a little extra seclusion.

Outside, the enclosed rear garden offers a relaxed extension of the home, with a paved terrace, lawned areas, outdoor dining furniture and barbecue designed for easy alfresco living. After days spent exploring the surrounding Suffolk countryside, return to slow evenings in the garden, shared meals outdoors or quiet moments as the light fades. Sleeping up to eight guests and welcoming well-behaved dogs, with parking for three cars, this historic cottage is perfectly suited to families or groups seeking a restorative countryside escape where character, comfort and connection come naturally.

Wonderful Stay in Constable Country

Our party enjoyed the comfort and coziness of this 500 yr old property. We loved walking in the parkland and sitting by the roaring fire. Everyone in our group was able to enjoy day trips and we were close to the family wedding we attended. The countryside is gorgeous and serene and the nights a quiet. Lovely place. Highly recommend.

A beautiful historical property

This place oozes with charm and character and being able to share such a piece of history with my family was greatly appreciated. The property is very comfortable and well equipped. The manager was very helpful in sorting out a problem with the internet. Lavenham is well worth a visit as is Kentwell Hall. This place does not disappoint.
