![Châtillon-sur-Indre (Indre) La motte, la Tour de César (donjon) avec sa porte d'origine et les restes de la porte d'en bas de l'enceinte La Tour de César est le donjon d'un ancien château médiéval. Ce genre de tour était un élément majeur de l'architecture militaire médiévale. On n'est ici pas très loin des limites de l'empire angevin, d'où la nécessité de surveiller les frontières. Le donjon de Châtillon-sur-Indre est l'un des derniers vestiges d'un puissant château fort édifié sur ordre d'Henri II Plantagenêt vers 1160. Le château était en effet à la limite des domaines du roi de France et du roi d'Angleterre. A la fin du XIIème siècle-début XIIIème, sous Philippe Auguste, le château entre dans le domaine du roi de France En avril 1205, Philippe Auguste cédera le château, à titre provisoire, à Dreu de Mello, fils du connétable* de France Dreu III (ou IV) de Mello*. A la mort, sans postérité, de Dreu de Mello, en 1249, les héritiers contesteront le retour du domaine dans le domaine royale. Après marchandage, le neveu de Dreu de Mello recevra 600 livres de rente pour renoncer à Châtillon et Loches. Ces 600 livres seront inscrites sur la recette des prévôtés et baillages*. En septembre 1274, le roi Philippe III (Philippe le Hardi) donne le château à son Grand Chambellan*, Pierre de La Brosse*. Pierre de la Brosse qui ne possédera le château que jusqu'en 1278, pour cause de pendaison suite à une présumée trahison au profit d'Alphonse de Castille. Pendant les XIIIème et XIVème siècles, le château ne voit que le séjour temporaire et occasionnel du roi. Philippe III y séjournera du 26 a 30 novembre 1283; Philippe IV en mai 1289, août 1305 et février 1307; Jean II à l'hiver 1346. Le château fait partie du duché de Touraine quand Louis d'Amboise en fait une prison en 1432. La château quittera et retrouvera le domaine royal à plusieurs reprises. Au moment de la Révolution, la terre de Châtillon est dans la famille Amelot. Tel qu'il se présente avec sa tour cylindrique qui culmine à 30 mètres, entourée d'un rempart de protection sur une motte calcaire rehaussée, c'est l'un des plus ancien de France. Au 19ème siècle, le château est découpé en parcelles. Le donjon et sa chemise seront donnés à la commune. La commune utilisera le donjon commle château d'eau en 1932. Le connétable, "comes stabuli", comte de l'étable, est à l'origine chargé des écuries, donc des chevaux de guerre. Le connétable de France sera le chef des armées. Ici, il s'agit probablement de Dreu III (ou IV) de Mello, mort en 1218, châtelain de Loches et Châtillon. Le châtelain n'est pas propriétaire du château, c'est souvent le commandant de la place. Son fils, Dreu de Mello, sera seigneur, donc propriétaire de Châtillon. Dreu III (ou IV) de Mello accompagna Philippe Auguste en Terre Sainte lors de la troisième croisade. Le roi le récompensera avec la charge de connétable et les châtellenies de Loches et Châtillon. Il décèdera le 3 mars 1218 à l'âge de 80 ans. Il aura trois enfants, Guillaume qui deviendra Guillaume Ier de Mello seigneur de Saint-Bris, Dreu de Mello qui sera seigneur de Loches et Châtillon, et Agnès qui sera mariée à Garnier III de Traînel, seigneur de Marigny. Prévôtés et bailliages sont des circonscriptions administratives et judiciaires. Le Grand Chambellan de France, très proche du roi, pourrait être comparé au premier ministre actuel. Pierre de la Brosse commence sa fortune comme barbier, et donc chirurgien, de Saint Louis. Le roi dut être content de ses services, puisqu'il en fit un châtelain et le nomma chambellan. Philippe, le fils du roi, le futur Philippe III dit le Hardi, fut également séduit par le personnage. Pierre de la Brosse accompagnera Saint Louis dans la huitième croisade, croisade où le roi trouvera la mort, de dysenterie, à Tunis (Lors de cette croisade, mourront également le fils aîné du roi et Isabelle d'Aragon). Philippe III succéda donc à son père et fit entière confiance à Pierre de la Brosse qu'il nomma Grand Chambellan de France. Pierre de la Brosse profita de cette promotion et de la confiance du roi pour placer toute sa famille en particulier grâce à des alliances matrimoniales avantageuses. Cette rapide ascension sociale d'un individu de petite noblesse (et non de basse extraction comme le prétendirent les jaloux), lui attira de nombreuses inimitiés chez les grands. Surtout, ceux-ci ne supportent pas d'être obligés de ramper à ses pieds pour bénéficier des libéralités royales. Le 21 août 1274, Philippe III épouse en secondes noces Marie de Brabant (sa première épouse, dont il aura quatre fils, Isabelle d'Aragon, était morte en Calabre, enceinte, au retour de la huitième croisade). Marie, prit ascendant sur le roi, ce qui causa bientôt de l'ombrage à l'ancien barbier. En mai 1276, le prince héritier Louis, issu du premier mariage, mourut subitement, à l'âge de 12 ou 13 ans. Des insinuations diffusées par Pierre de La Brosse, laissèrent entendre que le jeune Louis avait été empoisonné par sa belle-mère, Marie de Brabant, dans le dessein d'éliminer successivement les fils d'Isabelle d'Aragon et de promouvoir sa descendance. "En lan de grace mil CC.LXXVI. avint que Loys le premier filz le roy Phelippe mourut et fu empoisonné si comme aucuns dient. Le roy en fu en soupecçon, et ceste souspecçon mist en son cuer Pierre de la Broche, son maistre chambellenc".(Guillaume de Nangis, moine de Saint Denis mort en 1300 -"Gesta Philippi Tertia Francorum Regis") La reine accuse à son tour le chambellan Pierre de la Brosse de manipulation. Pour se tirer d'affaire, il tenta, par l'intermédiaire de son cousin évêque de Bayeux, de suborner une béguine de Liège qui prétendait avoir des révélations à faire sur la mort du jeune Louis. L'évêque lui demanda de dire que la mort du jeune prince était due à la "clique brabançonne" qui entourait la reine. Mais l'évêque de Liège interrogea la béguine et révéla la supercherie. Toutefois, le roi hésitait encore à désavouer son favori et à innocenter sa femme. Il en fallait plus. Les "grands" trouvèrent : on l'accusa d'être à l'origine d'un revirement soudain du roi dans la campagne de Castille, suite à une manipulation. Pierre de la Brosse fut donc arrêté en janvier 1278 pour haute trahison. On l'éloigna de la capitale, à Janville(Eure-et-Loire), certainement pour que le roi ne puisse le sauver. Pierre de La Brosse fut jugé par les "grands", dont certains étaient d'ailleurs ses débiteurs, et non par des gens de loi, et pendu le 30 juin 1278 au gibet de Montfaucon. "(...) Quant les barons furent assemblez, Pierre fu tantost délivré au bourrel de Paris qui pent les larrons, à bon matin au soleil levant. Si le convoièrent au gibet, le duc de Bourgoingne; le duc de Breuban; le conte d'Artois, et plusieurs autres nobles barons. (...) "Malheureusement le prix est vraiment exagéré par rapport à l’état de la chambre - moquette tachée, sale de bain peu pratique et isolation sonore moyenne - il faut réserver les restaurants à l’avance sous peine de devoir déjeuner très tôt et souper très tard comme il n’y a rien alentour. Mérite une petite revue du concept . La piscine est chouette mais les remous et autres étaient toujours fermés lors de nos visites . On aurait aimé un apéro au bord de l’eau mais il n’y avait pas de service non...

"We enjoyed the serenity of the location, the nature and beauty of the house and gardens. The home was secure with a gate. The animals were a bonus. We loved the old house and the antique furniture and the level of furnishings. The accommodation is very spacious and comfortable. What we found a bit odd was no curtains in the kitchen/living room and lounge areas but we have experienced the same thing in another cottage in France and therefore presume that this is the standard. In all, the advertising was exactly what was delivered and I wish to thank the host for the clarity in communication and response to my questions."
