Bedford, Virginia, was chosen as the location of the memorial because the community of Bedford suffered the highest per-capita D-Day losses in the nation. The memorial is spread over 88 acres and is divided into patterns which represent the various stages or aspects of the invasion. The centerpiece of the memorial is the Victory Plaza arch, which can be seen for miles. The arch contains a single word, Overlord, referring to Operation Overlord, the code name of the Battle of Normandy. The arch is crowned with five chiseled elements designed to resemble the roofs of houses seen by airborne troops as they passed over the Normandy countryside on the eve of D-Day. It is a peaceful setting with lots to offer. Our November stay and the cold snap that moved in toward the end of our visit did not allow for much outdoor time but we had a few hours of sunshine to enjoy the water view from the deck. There is some level of water view from almost every room in the house in the fall. And the heat worked great when the outdoor temp reached the low 30s with wind chill of 18 degrees! Convenient to Lexington to see all the history in the town. The drive out to the house is awesome, very remote but we still felt very safe. Deer were everywhere. Big yard for the dog to play as well.
