"The Step House hotel was one of our favorite stays on our Ireland trip! We had a beautiful and spacious room that opened onto a terrace overlooking the gardens and mountains in the distance. We enjoyed a delicious dinner and breakfast in the 1808 Pub. The staff was wonderful and the extra touches like flowers and prosecco in the room made this the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary and start off our trip! We enjoyed the small town of Borris and walking the Railway trail. We hope to...

Top Ballon Hotel Reviews

Lyrath Estate Hotel Spa & Convention Centre

8/10 Good

"We had a lovely stay here - not quite 5 star in my opinion, but still very good. The staff were very helpful with our requests and the grounds are great for a walk."

Kilkenny House Boutique Hotel

8/10 Good

"Overall a Safe choice, spacious bedrooms and ensuites. Clean and cosy with some quirky stylish decor in breakfast/coffee area. Competitively priced rooms, 25mins walk from kilkenny city center but also with the addition of the KK2 bus stop for the public bus route running every 30 minutes to and from the city being only a few minutes walk away from the hotel door to assist those with tired legs. It has a very comfortable and well stocked bar, helpful staff and the bar food is tasty but admittedly the menu could do with a little more imagination. I would and will return although I feel this property has the potential to be so much more with a little professional advice on how to up its game while also attracting extra custom and revenue. It's in close proximity to two large hospitals and some local targeted advertising to expand and up the usage of their very pleasant cafe and bar/restaurant would be a start. Thought could also be given to installation of some EV charging points to their carpark with customer priority as at present the nearest EV chargers are over 2km away. Rediculously neither of the close by hospitals provide EV charging. I'm sure a professional could add a whole lot more to this list of potential improvements to make this nice little hotel really shine, but for the moment as it stands it still remains a good, clean and sensible choice for those looking for a good value accommodation close to kilkenny city."

The Lodges at Kilkea Castle

8/10 Good

"A lovely family breakaway at Kilkea Castle Lodges We had a lovely stay at Kilkea Castle Lodges for our first little breakaway as a family of three with our 3-month-old daughter. The lodge was a great size, and we really enjoyed the delicious breakfast in the clubhouse, the beautiful grounds and the spa facilities. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We really appreciated having a cot and water provided on request. We did have a small issue one rainy evening when the safety latch on the door to Lodge 352 locked us out, but the staff responded immediately and were very helpful in resolving it. There are a few minor areas for improvement. The steps at the entrance to the lodge mean it isn’t easily accessible for prams or wheelchair users, which is worth considering for families with young babies and guests with mobility needs. The door to Lodge 352 was also difficult to close and required a loud bang, which wasn’t ideal when trying not to wake a sleeping baby. We noticed draughts coming in through the windows and patio door, particularly on a very windy night. Providing kitchen roll or a tea towel in the kitchen would also be a useful addition for drying cups and dishes. Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay and loved the setting, the lodge and the warm hospitality. With a few small improvements, it would be even better. We would happily return and look forward to visiting again!"

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go to Ballon?

The best time to go to Ballon, County Carlow, is during the late spring and summer months, from May to September.

During these months, the weather is generally milder and drier, making it ideal for exploring the local countryside and attractions. You'll find longer daylight hours, which is superb for enjoying outdoor activities like walking or visiting the Altamont Gardens, a well-known local gem. The local Ballon Horse Show, a popular annual event, typically takes place in August, offering a chance to experience a traditional Irish country show.

For those who prefer to avoid the busiest tourist periods, late May and early June offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds. This period is particularly good for couples looking for a peaceful getaway, as the gardens are in full bloom and the evenings are long and bright, ideal for relaxing strolls.

If you're interested in local agricultural events and a lively community atmosphere, August is an excellent choice due to the Horse Show.
