Historic Schoolmaster’s House in Zoar
Step back into another world and time and unwind with your family and friends or slip into a romantic weekend in this recently restored historic home in the heart of Zoar Village, a National Historic Landmark. The Schoolmaster's House was built in 1881 for the Village Schoolmaster. The home has been lovingly restored to share with guests looking for a peaceful retreat or as a base when exploring Zoar Village, Amish Country, Canton and nearby Atwood Lake.
The historic Schoolmaster’s House retains many of the original features of the home, including exposed wood beams in the kitchen and exposed brick chimneys throughout, while offering modern conveniences such as a completely renovated main bath with jetted tub. The home is approximately 1900 square feet and boasts 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, and a back screened-in porch for your morning coffee or evening glass of wine.
The first level greets guests with a comfortable living space that includes an electric fireplace with heat for added ambiance and warmth in the cooler seasons. There is an antique checker/game table and game chest with a selection of games for all ages. A record player with a small vinyl selection helps take you back to another time. If you prefer more modern conveniences, there is a 43” inch smart television that includes complimentary Netflix (no cable). WIFI throughout the home. Each floor of the home has smart speakers. The living room can be closed off by doors for privacy for guests using the Queen pull-out sofa.
The dining room includes a custom Amish-made dining table that can comfortably seat up to six (6), with additional space for two more. There is a wine bar with all the basic essentials for an evening nightcap after exploring the area. The kitchen has original hardwood floors and exposed wood beams while offering the modern conveniences of new cabinets, new farmhouse sink, quartz countertops, gas stove, and refrigerator. There is a kitchen banquette that seats up to four (4) and can be doubled as a workspace. The kitchen island provides additional seating for two (2). A custom Amish-made coffee bar includes Keurig coffeemaker, latte/cappuccino maker, a regular coffee pot, and electric tea kettle.
Off the kitchen is a screened-in back porch with two rocking chairs and a loveseat to enjoy a quiet morning coffee, read a book, or unwind with a glass of wine. The front porch offers a porch swing where you can enjoy the Zoar Schoolhouse across the street or catch an Amish buggy passing by.
The second level has three bedrooms and the main bathroom. The main bedroom has a comfortable king-size four-poster bed and electric fireplace. The second bedroom offers a Queen size bed and make-up vanity. The third bedroom was appointed with children in mind and includes a daybed with a trundle and small play area, complete with two historical American Girl Dolls and accessories (Kristen and Addie), play barn, wooden train set, play table, handmade historical dress-up clothes, and other vintage toys and books. The main bathroom has been completely renovated with a jetted tub and new vanity. Enjoy complimentary toiletries, plush towels, and soft bathrobes.
The backyard has a private sitting area with Adirondack chairs and a gas fire pit. Take a ride in the Village or on the nearby towpath on one of the complimentary bicycles. Additional bikes are available to rent in the Village.
Location: The Schoolmaster’s House is located in the heart of historic Zoar Village. Across the street is the Zoar Schoolhouse, which is often rented out for wedding receptions and family reunions. The Schoolhouse Grounds has a swing set available for public use. Also across the street is another public space with a gazebo to enjoy a quiet afternoon of reading. Walk next door to Soul Sisters Cafe for an amazing quick breakfast or lunch (Tuesday thru Saturday). Los Venados Mexican Restaurant Grill & Cantina is a quick walk for a delicious dinner in its newly renovated dining room or outdoor patio. Also, walk the Village and see Zoar’s other historical homes, museum, bakery, store, and antique shops (seasonal). Zoar Garden and Zoar wetland are also within walking distance, as is the towpath and the Erie Canal.
Get in your car for a quick drive to one of the liveries for kayaking/canoeing or spend the day swimming and boating at Atwood Lake (both 10-15 minute drives); Ohio’s Amish Country and wineries (15-20 minute drive); and, Canton’s Football Hall of Fame (20 minute drive).
Keyless entry and parking for two cars in driveway.
Other things to note: The home has been thoughtfully appointed with amenities to cater to couples, families, and bridal parties who are getting married in the nearby Zoar Garden.
For couples, we offer a romantic main suite, jetted tub, bathrobes, living room and main suite fireplaces, and wine and coffee bars.
For families with young children, we have everything you need. Just pack your clothes and personal toiletries. We offer a children’s room with educational and vintage toys, including historic American Girl Dolls, play barn, historical dress-up clothes, antique school desk, play table, and chalkboard; changing pad; pack-and-play; highchair and toddler plates, utensils, and cups; and, baby monitor, baby soap, and baby towels. We have an assortment of family games, and adult and children's bikes with helmets. When it is too cool to make S’mores on the gas fire pit, make them indoors on our S’mores maker.
For the bride getting married across the street at Zoar Garden and looking for a place to get ready for the big day, we offer several comfortable rooms with mirrors throughout to get ready, including a charming antique make-up vanity/stool and beautiful full-length mirror.
We strive to make our home accessible to everyone, including individuals with limited mobility. With this being a historic home, please understand the stairs to the second level are a bit narrower than what is found in homes today (there is a handrail). If the stairs to the second level are a concern, there is a sleeper sofa (Queen) and half-bath on the main floor. There is one small step leading to the front door..

Liked: Cleanliness, amenities, property conditions & facilities, communication
Very clean property and great communication with the owner. If you like old homes with character this is the place to stay. It does have all the comforts and we just felt "at home."
My husband and I were in town for the Artisans Tent at Historic Zoar Village and the location could not have been better! We were able to walk to the event from the house and the museum's buildings in a few minutes. The house itself should be on the cover of a magazine as it is beautifully restored/decorated and had everything we needed for our stay. The host provided detailed check-in instructions and even gave us a delicious restaurant recommendation in Strasburg. If we are ever in the area again, we would not hesitate to stay here again. Thank you Pete!
An adorable historic home and town with lots of upgrades to the amenities available. No corners cut here, cozy beds, top notch linens, games, and even refreshments. We enjoyed our stay very much, thank you to the host and hostess!
Super cute home . Beds were very cozy . My granddaughter loved playing in the kids room with the toys. I highly recommend this place comfortable and charming.
This property felt as cozy as my own home, the attention to detail for comfort was not sparred in any room. The location couldn’t have been more perfect.
I would definitely stay there again
The property was meticulously renovated to when it was build and has all the modern conveniences. Our stay was very comfortable and relaxing. So many amenities were provided which showed such attention to detail. The cleanliness was outstanding and every aspect of the house beautifully decorated. We are looking forward to a return visit!!
Great property!
So cozy with hospitable touches.
Sitting on the screen porch at dusk was a pleasant surprise of fauna engagement- many different birds, black squirrels, bunnies and deer feeding. Loved it!
The town has so much good stuff to learn about. Go see the old brewery spot.
Cheers!
Pete was a great host providing all necessary details prior to arrival. The house was beautiful, ver clean, and had everything we needed for a successful stay. The town was very quiet and beautiful.
We had a wonderful stay! A group of teachers stayed here and we loved it. It was beautiful and so charming. It was decorated beautifully with modern touches. It was comfortable, a great place to relax and spend time together. Definitely a place we would love to come back to!
Celebrate my Mom's 85th birthday. Everyone but my husband and myself live out of state. We just lived it so much that we stayed extra day. Wonderful area and beautiful place to stay
Simply the best place we have ever stayed. The Schoolmaster's House is a beautifully restored home, immaculately clean and comfortable, with all you need for a great stay in a charming village. Thanks, Pete for saving and sharing this piece of history.
This was a great experience. Peter had great response time and was helpful. The place was cute and a great quick stay. They had everything you would want for a comfy stay.
Very quaint place. It was so quiet and peaceful, but just a short distance to many dining options. Hosts were good to respond when we had questions. Had a good weekend!
Beautiful home that was such a wonderful, warm place to come back to after a long day. It was fun to walk around the quaint town. I would stay here again and again. All the modern conveniences with all the old-world warmth!
We were charmed the minute we stepped inside. Impeccably clean, very comfortable, well equipped kitchen. Many thoughtful and welcoming touches. We hope to return.
Beautifully restored home with modern conveniences and period charm. Warm and welcoming, with attentive hosts, the Schoolmaster's House is centrally located for a day of exploration in Amish Country and a return to Zoar for dinner and relaxation.
The only downside to the trip was that we only had one night to stay. We would have loved to have stayed longer. My wife grew up just outside of Zoar and she actually used to babysit for the family who lived in this house back in the 90’s. She was very impressed with how you renovated the house but still managed to keep all of the old character. We will definitely be staying again in the future when we visit family.
Since you are visiting Zoar, you probably have an appreciation of history. This historic property offers a unique opportunity to stay in an important home in the community of Zoar. It looks as it did when it was built, but with all the modern conveniences. I’m very glad that we stumbled across this unique home.
