Royal Whitby

Royal Whitby

8/10 Good
"The check-in was easy and the staff were friendly. The room had everything you would expect, and was very clean. Even though it was pretty hot outside the room was reasonably cool and a fan was provided. One thing to note is there weren’t many sockets in our room, meaning I had to choose between the lamp or the fan and plug my phone in at the end of the bed, not a big issue though. Opted not to include breakfast in our booking as there are a lot of nice, reasonably priced cafe’s close by. But the bar was well managed with lots of seating both inside & out. Only issue we had was with the parking, I had messaged in advance to request parking, but when we arrived the car park was completely full aside from a few spaces which were marked as reserved for specific people. Fortunately there was some nearby on street parking available and it wasn’t too expensive for just a weekend."

"Room 3 on the top floor, great view of the harbour. Pub with rooms but it was quiet and not disturbed by any noise downstairs. Very clean and seems to have been newly refitted or at the very least. Very well maintained. Big bathroom and finished to high spec. Would stay again."

"Good value B&B in a good quiet location on the west cliff. Very short walk to the whale bones and nearby pubs/restaurants as well as reasonable walking distance from the train or bus station, but also provides parking permits if needed. Room had a decent fan which was helpful over the warm weather. Bill was a helpful host and sorted an issue for us very quickly."

The Mallyan Spout Hotel

The Mallyan Spout Hotel

8/10 Good
"We stayed for one night at the Mallyan Spout Hotel in a Superior Double. We were on the top floor which is a bit of a hike, but a nice attic room with views over the gardens which were looking lovely despite the recent, ongoing drought. The room was south-facing which meant it was very hot in the afternoon when we arrived. Luckily, there was a fan provided and we brought an evaporative cooler which together made the heat more bearable, but still quite hot. The garden is a lovely spot for a drink and to enjoy the views over the Moors. We didn't eat at the hotel, so we can't comment on the food for dinner, but the breakfast was excellent. There is the offer of a free glass of fizz (of which we didn't partake), a good buffet of pastries, meat, cheese, juices, and very nice parfaits of yogurt, oats and berries. Of course, there is a full Yorkshire breakfast with excellent black pudding and very good sausage, but also the opportunity to have Whitby kippers which are legendary! There are a number of other choices from avocado toast to Eggs Benedict. A cafetiere of very good coffee as well. We would certainly stay again, but perhaps in a room facing the back to avoid sun and maybe not during the hottest day of a very hot summer!"
