Hidden gem in Northern Italy - Charming Tirano
"We were merely passing thru Tirano on our way to Milano. We wanted a place w/ good reviews that was close to train station. When we got to Tirano, we mapped the hotel. It was raining lightly at the time, & to our dismay, the map showed a 12 min walk that was moderately uphill. We gritted our teeth & began the soggy walk, dragging our suitcases over ancient cobblestones. My wife was a little upset w/herself because our accommodations were much further than she had thought. But…. Once we arrived at this jewel of a hotel, we were blown away by the vision that the owner (Andrea) had for this ancient building. The remodel he did was spectacular. We got a very real sense of the original building, yet it also conveyed a sense of modern comfort. Architectural details were magnificent. His contractors were truly artisans & his choices in style and materials were extremely well thought out & executed. Andrea was extremely helpful with our luggage & had a wonderful sense of humor. We really appreciated hearing about the history of what was his grandmother’s home & his ambitious project to expand & remodel it. Beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was wonderful & was a great value.
Andrea called a cab in the morning to get us to train station. This was extremely quick and convenient. Fare for us was 10€. Well worth it!
His recommendation for a cab proved fortuitous. Our train was canceled & driver took us to nearby Sondrio to catch a train that allowed us to make our connection in Milano"
