Between the sea and the green cliffs of Plymouth is an art deco swimming pool surrounded by fountains, deck chairs and a café.

The Tinside Lido consists of a large semi-circular swimming pool and complex that overlooks the English Channel. Showing off an art deco design, the site has been a key part of Plymouth’s coastline since its inauguration in 1935. Bring your family to enjoy this saltwater pool on a warm summer afternoon.

Rent lounge chairs and sunbathe next to the edge of the pool. Swim from one side to the other in this pool, which has a diameter of 180 feet (55 meters).

Kids will enjoy gathering around the large fountain that sprays jets of water into the air from the center of the pool. Spot the two additional fountains in the corners that add to the elegant design of the lido.

Admire the views of the sea, before diving underwater. The pool has a depth ranging from 2 feet (0.6 meters) to 9 feet (2.7 meters), making it ideal for both young kids and serious swimmers. Practice swimming along the straight lines of the pool’s floor design. Do a leisurely backstroke and look upon the rocky bluffs of Plymouth.

On the side, relax with a hot or cold beverage or ice cream from the café and browse the equipment in the shop.

Purchase a family ticket for the lido, which opens seasonally from May to September. It operates daily from morning to late afternoon, starting a little later during school times. The pool closed in 1992 following a period of decline, before reopening in 2005 after a renovation.

The Tinside Lido overlooks the coast in The Hoe district at the southern end of central Plymouth. From the heart of the city, walk south for almost 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to get here in about 20 minutes. You can also ride a bus to the War Memorial stop, a short walk northeast of the lido.

While in this area, visit some of the neighboring sights, such as Smeaton’s Tower, the Belvedere Wedding Cake and Hoe Park.
