This place has a really unique vibe that is really charming and hospitable. It's hard to define, but let me try: there are free homemade chocolates at check-in; free drinks (not just tea and coffee, but even soft drinks or a beer) and free homemade cakes on offer in the library/common room. The breakfast was very nice - it even included crumpets one day! The staff were friendly and helpful, giving us great advice on our activities for the following day. They upgraded our room because "this one's nicer" and I guess was empty at the time. The room didn't have a TV, but that fitted the ambience really nicely (the common room had a TV - also a gramophone, musical instruments, and a pretty extensive library).
I give this place two thumbs up: it was the best place we stayed at on the South Island! If you're planning a trip out to Milford Sound, this is a great place to stay before and after!
