About this property
Cottage on the Hill overlooking Acadia Mountains, nearby Bay and Acadia Park
The Cottage on a Hill is located in a spacious, newly-renovated Maine barn on a beautiful and historic farm. It is a five minute walk to nearby scenic Morgan Bay, very close to hiking trails, biking and swimming. Acadia National Park is about 45 minutes away.
The farm offers a seasonal performing arts center featuring classical, jazz, singer songwriter and blues series among others.
Few rental spaces offer all of this in a ten-minute radius.
Pets: Dogs and cats are welcome, but you must contact me in advance so we can discuss details. Upon approval, there is an additional cleaning fee of $50.00 for the one pet or $80 for two pets. The fee for the first pet is included in your VRBO total. If bringing more than one pet, the additional pet fee is payable in cash at checkout. Stays longer than 7 days will need to discuss possible additional pet cleaning fees with the host. Please note that many animals live near the property and frequently walk through it (such as deer, wild turkeys, neighbors' cats, etc.) A porcupine lives under one of the barns, so we recommend keeping dogs on a leash when outside to avoid injury.
Late arrivals after 9:00 PM are subject to a late fee of $25.00.
Additional guests: For more than 2 guests, there is an additional fee of $25 per guest per night.

Farmhouse apartment was nice and well equipped. Property was beautiful and had everything we needed for a relaxing stay in Maine with easy access to Ellsworth and Acadia.
Lovely apartment in old converted barn quite smartly and comfortably furnished. Alan made us and our large dog feel at home. Thanks so much for a quiet break from July crowds!

Just the quiet needed
I came here stressed and this was the perfect place to unwind. Saw some very cool wildlife. Came for Acadia which is about an hour away (CANNOT beat the price for being relatively close).
Alan was very hospitable during our stay. He walked us through the rental and offered recommendations for local restaurants, hike trails, and viewpoints. Alan was only a phone call away whenever we needed anything or had any questions.
The uniqueness of the property was very inviting. Everything about the stay was very comfortable and it's a very quiet location.I was able to go for a nature walk just .1 miles away and bike to a beach that was 2.4 miles away. It was a bit of a distance from Bar Harbor but a lovely scenic drive to get there and back. Alan was a wonderful host and we did a lovely campfire one of the evenings.
Very quiet property. Beautiful view of Acadia. Very well equipped for a multi-day stay. Full size refrigerator, new induction cook top, new cook ware. Great internet service. Small music venue on site with performances often. Owner very helpful and accommodating by allowing us to bring our 2 small dogs.

Pretty good!
Alan (the owner) I don’t think uses the Vrbo app so he will reach out to you by phone number place was nice and clean didn’t really have a view though but I wasn’t there for the view I wanted to go see the place which I did but it’s a nice place would stay again. But if your are staying multiple days make sure to bring your own shampoo and body wash
A good base camp for visiting the Acadia National Park area without the maddening crowds.. we enjoyed the 45 minute drive each way to/from the Acadia NP area... light traffic on the 2-lane highways/roadways to Ellsworth made this a nice way to start and finish each day. But, be sure you stock up on snacks/food to cook because you won't find any nearby restaurants - and that's what makes it such a great location! It's definitely a more rustic interior than your typical hotel/motel but that's part of the charm. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware and utensils, etc. and the overall open layout is very "loft" like. We really enjoyed the location and the host is welcoming and informative - they've been in the area for decades and are a great resource.
The apartment was not as it appeared in VRBO photos. The pics must have been taken by a professional photographer when you compare the actual place to the “apartment.”
It was clean but extremely rustic - and perhaps this is ok with some. The smell is very musty perhaps because this is an actual renovated barn. There are three apartments in this barn which could also make it very noisy at times.
Views are not as portrayed.
However, the host, Alan, was very friendly and we enjoyed meeting him.
The property was as rustic as promised, including the mice (!). Views of Acadia, when we could see through the mist, were lovely.
Alan was responsive when we discovered a plumbing problem for which he worked out a solution.
We would encourage him to update the listing to NOT include an oven. We chose this listing because it offered a full kitchen. Also, the overall rules list would benefit from updated Wifi information.
And there were few back-up supplies. Although we were directed to use any toiletries, the bathroom cupboard was empty.
That written, the bed and futon were amazingly comfortable, and our stay, overall, was pleasant.

Anniversary get away
Overall the stay was nice. The cabin was clean and had a functional kitchen. However, to check in, we had to call the host directly and have him meet us. We couldn’t get in contact with the host despite multiple attempts and wound up having to wait on site for him to reach out to us to get in. This also made would have made it difficult had we needed anything during our stay. There wasn’t any shampoo or conditioner as there should have been but we wound up purchasing those ourselves to avoid having to get in contact with the host.
Also, if you are looking for a private getaway, this isn’t it. There are two other cottages with in 10 steps. There are others slightly farther away. We didn’t mind it as we were gone all day each day so it suited our needs.
And bring warm clothes in the fall/winter. The heater doesn’t effectively heat up the whole space.
Overall, it was a good place and worked for us and it was convenient to Acadia, bar harbor, and everything else we wanted to see.
Really enjoyed our labor day weekend in this beautiful area. The grounds really have a lot of character that really relaxes you. My fiance and I hiked Acadia and loved getting to enjoy the Bar Harbor area but then come back to a peaceful cottage. Alan is a great guy too.
I enjoyed staying at Alan's place. He met me at the property and showed me around the apartment, explaining everything I needed to know. I very much like that kind of in person treatment.
Very nice, full kitchen (which I didn't really need!). Bathrooms are more than adequate with plenty of hot water. May be slightly more rustic if that's not your thing (or, just what you want if it is!)

Could be good
If you are going to stay here, I suggest one of the cabins which look great.
As for the “apartment with a view” - your view most likely will be other guests grilling just a few feet from your bedroom window on what turns out to be a communal deck, or sitting at the fire ring in front of the apartment with the smoke wafting inside. On the very hot, muggy nights I was there I had to close my windows (and, for privacy, my blinds).
