Nice place to stay, very spacious for a couple. We had our dog who was apprehensive about the spiral staircase but caught on quickly. The backyard to play catch was awesome but if your dog can jump they will be over the short fence in no time. A pleasant walk to restaurants and a quick drive to the Bass Harbor lighthouse from this location.
The property was brand new and was a fun loft layout. It was in a very central location and was close to every destination on Mount Desert Island. The property manager texted us when we were out to lunch saying they were coming by and going to come in to the unit to drop off furniture with no notice which was a bit off putting. They said they ended up not entering, likely because my dog barked at them.
Overall, we loved our stay. The condo was nice and comfortable and clean. It was a little further than we imagined to get to most parts of Acadia National Park, but not a big deal.
It was a cozy home, however as someone with mobility issues, I found the spiral staircase to be a little less sturdy than imagined, my issue not theirs.
The only real issue I had and the reason my overall rating is a 4 instead of 5 is that they admitted over the phone, and the book they have there makes it pretty clear too since it is included in it as well, that they have not changed the door code since at least the beginning of the tourist season on the island, meaning anyone that has stayed in the condo could theoretically come and go as they please. As a result, we did not feel comfortable leaving valuables like camera equipment and jewelry in the home unless we left our service animal in the home. Good security practice would include changing this for each guest as part of the cleaning services.
Great place to stay close to Acadia and neat SW Harbor downtown. We were 3 adults and a dog. It was doable but I personally think its best for 2 people. The bed was comfortable which is really important to me when choosing a place to stay. We initially had a problem with the slider to the backdoor. The lock was jammed so we couldn't access the yard, which was key with the dog. Susan was very responsive and within an hour the owner came to fix the problem. The decor is cute and the place is pretty well appointed. I do think they need to be more generous with paper products. They left 1/2 roll of paper towels and 2 rolls of toilet paper for 3 people for 7 days. There was no foil, plastic wrap or bags of any sort in the kitchen and no grill tools for the grill. Most places we have stayed provided all of that without us having to go to the store to buy it. All in all its a cute, clean and comfortable place to stay.
The stay was really great. Communication with the property representative was fine. The property was clean and nicely appointed. We found the Southwest Harbor area delightfully devoid of the crowds and parking problems attendant with Bar Harbor.
Pro Tip Number 1: For those who will arrive after dark, be aware that there are not one but two distinct dwellings located on the residential plot at the address associated with this listed property: (i) a “house-looking” dwelling (NOT this listing), and (ii) this listed property (labeled “Suite 3”), a two-story block-shaped dwelling that sits behind (i.e., further away from the street) the “house dwelling,” and of which the exterior view is not as you see depicted in the sole exterior photo in the listing description photos (i.e., the dwelling with a grassy yard abutting the property); point of fact, that exterior photo shows the listed property solely from the rear. As such, when pulling into the driveway at night, don’t expect to see grass around the listed property.
Pro Tip Number 2: The listing description accurately describes that the single bedroom is located in the loft area, and also accurately describes the many useful features of the one bathroom; however, the listing description fails to mention that the bedroom and the bathroom are not on the same level. For those who may not wish to descend and ascend the narrow spiral staircase to get to the bathroom during the night, forearmed is forewarned.
We enjoyed our stay. The property is nice, and having a large back yard was great with your dog. The property layout is a little funny, with the main bedroom upstairs, but with no bathroom, so you have to come down the stairs to use the bathroom. Location is great, walking distance to SW Harbor restaurants, and close to grocery store and coffee shop. Unfortunately, property manager not customer focused, not really trying to make stay better. First night, at 9:20 pm we noticed there’s no sheets for sofa bed; property manager she says they’ll drop them off the next morning — but we have two people now without a bed. Property manager says use comforter, blanket and decorative pillows from upstairs bed; which we were concerned about because beyond being uncomfortable, these are items that don’t get washed regularly. I insisted we needed sheets as we reserved and payed for 4 guests, and the property manager flat out refused to bring until the next morning. Night 2, at 11 pm, fuel gas alarm goes off. Property manager first reaction is “just unplug it”. After we push back given there could be a real leak in the kitchen propane connection, she contacts Fire Department who came and checked, no leak in kitchen connection, but fuel gas detector would keep going off. To owner’s credit we asked for, and received, refund for 2 nights given the above experience; but with a more customer oriented property manager this property would be so much better. I hope owner reads this review
The good: 1.) Property manager communicated and responded in a timely fashion, 2.) Southwest Harbor is a nice (very small) neighborhood, 3.) The former barn/carriage house was large and interesting, but...
The bad: 1.) Street noise from vehicle traffic is loud. This property is located off of Main Street that has a shocking amount of traffic at seemingly all hours. This is the primary reason I only gave this property 3 stars. If you sleep like a log or w/ear plugs, add 1.5 stars to the overall score, 2.) The rental could use a little more TLC- the screen for the sliding glass door is damaged to the point you can't/don't want to move it, the end of the sink stopper is broken off in the bathroom, and I couldn't get one row of lights to work.
