The best area to stay in Santo Amaro is the village centre, particularly around the main square, Largo do Pelourinho.

This charming area is the heart of Santo Amaro, characterised by its traditional whitewashed houses with colourful trim and narrow, winding cobblestone streets. Largo do Pelourinho is easily identifiable by its historic pillory, a national monument, and is surrounded by a few local cafes and shops. It's a compact and very walkable area, allowing you to easily explore the village's heritage.

Couples looking for a peaceful and authentic Portuguese experience will find the village centre ideal. You're perfectly placed to enjoy leisurely strolls, discover hidden corners, and experience the quiet rhythm of village life. Many guesthouses in this area offer a personal touch, often with lovely courtyards or terraces for relaxing.

For those seeking a quiet retreat with a focus on natural beauty, areas just outside the immediate village centre, but still within easy walking distance, are also excellent. These properties often provide more space, perhaps with private gardens or views of the surrounding Alentejo countryside, which is dotted with olive groves and vineyards.

The best time to visit Santo Amaro is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months.

These periods offer pleasant weather, with comfortable temperatures that are ideal for exploring the region's natural beauty and historic sites without the intense heat of summer. You'll find the countryside lush and green in spring, while autumn brings a lovely palette of colours to the landscape.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and cycling, spring and autumn provide excellent conditions. The trails around the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park are particularly enjoyable during these times, offering stunning views and a chance to experience the local flora and fauna. Couples looking for a relaxing escape in nature will appreciate the tranquil environment and agreeable weather.

If you're interested in local gastronomy and wine, autumn is a particularly good time to visit, as it coincides with harvest season.
