A typical English country pub with a friendly aura, professional staff, spotlessly clean and a good array of beers. We stayed one night, the room was on the smaller size but well equipped. Being a pub bed and breakfast you have to accept noise to eleven but thereafter it was so peaceful until morning chorus. The full English breakfast was delicious and the fish and chips the previous night was also of a high standard. Recommendable.

Nice location. Parking is limited and very tight to get in and out of spaces. Staff weren’t super friendly. Room was big and nice but smelled like stale cigarette smoke. Rooms are also quite noisy. Nice enough stay.

Wonderful old property, we stayed in our first room for 3 days, the room was very clean but the bathroom was very small with an even smaller shower, the sink was in the room, we had booked a deluxe room but wonder if room 2 actually was one? We stayed in Room No 1, which was an indulgence room on our 4th night which was much better for us, larger bed, which didn't squeak, lovely big bathroom with a huge walk in shower. Breakfast was great,but they ran out of vegetarian sausages on our 2nd morning, also would have been better if breakfast was served until 9.30. We ate at the restaurant 3 times in the afternoon/evening and the food was excellent. The waitress who served us was very friendly and nothing was too much trouble, I think her name was Elinor. We will return but only if we can get the bigger room and bathroom again

The room decor and facilities are excellent, but the room itself is only the size of most single rooms. Its small 4ft 6ins bed has only just enough room to edge around it. There is no wardrobe for clothes.

Great room, Dyson fan worked well during the hot weather. Nice touches of complimentary drink on arrival and fresh milk in the room. Quality and choice of breakfast was superb. Only downside was very strict 3pm check in, and the parking available was very limited

Everything that the inn had to offer was amazing. Great service and friendly staff. Excellent breakfasts. Our only one concern was the smokers that were below our room on the patio. They were there both nights until 11pm. Our room windows let the smoke in, so we had to close them and the room got hot and it took a long time for the smell to clear. Lovely setting and we would definitely come again.

A lovely well appointed room, albeit very “cosy”, and the bathroom/shower facilities were excellent. A well cooked delicious breakfast was served in the library, and the staff were wonderful throughout, despite being incredibly busy. The only downside for me were the stairs to the rooms, as they are very steep and narrow, but overall we had a very enjoyable stay here.

The building is very old. With this comes issues with either a very steep staircase up to the rooms or use of an emergency exit at the rear (which is made of metal steps with a precarious old mat dangerously situated at the top). The room was lovely but it was very hot as situated above the kitchen. The weather was forecasted to be 28/29 degrees and I had to ask for a fan. It was a struggle to sleep in such temperatures as the fan was noisy so had to be switched off. In the morning I was greeted by a delightful member of breakfast staff. She went out of her way to be helpful. My choice of smashed avocado was quite a surprise. I’m not sure who was in charge but to receive an old browning avocado ‘chopped’ into cubes with 2 poached eggs thrown on top - presentation was definitely not their fortay! It was inedible other than the eggs that were fine. It’s such a shame as with an injection of money and some staff training for the breakfast chef (previous evening meal was fine) - the hotel could be attracting more custom. It was pretty empty for a Bank holiday weekend.

How do you expect business people to use your facility ,have breakfast after 7.30 and still get into Reading at a sensible time? The stairs are dangerous point blank Adding padding to low ceiling beams whilst helpful doesn’t stop you hitting your head despite no signs anywhere. The hallways are impossible to move suitcases through them.The parking is cramped and difficult to reverse out off. Oh and locking doors is never a good fire precaution for people with impairments. Safe to say never again

What a delightful stay in this ancient inn. All the staff we encountered were friendly & helpful and seemed genuinely pleased to look after us. Our bedroom was bijou but very well thought out with switches in the right place and plenty of sockets. A free welcome drink at bar was greatly appreciated. Dinner was tasty and breakfast was great, freshly cooked to order. We would most definitely stay here again, although I imagine it might be quite noisy on a summer’s evening.
