Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Purakaunui?
The best area to stay in Purakaunui is right within the Purakaunui Bay area itself, particularly around Purakaunui Falls Road.

This area is the heart of Purakaunui, known for its untouched natural beauty. It's a small, spread-out settlement primarily defined by its proximity to the iconic Purakaunui Falls and the rugged coastline of Purakaunui Bay. Accommodation options here are typically holiday homes or lodges, offering a tranquil escape.

For couples seeking a quiet and secluded retreat, staying in a holiday home near Purakaunui Bay is an excellent choice. You'll have direct access to nature walks, including the short stroll to the Purakaunui Falls, one of the most photographed waterfalls in New Zealand. The bay itself is a lovely spot for a peaceful walk along the beach.

Families will also find this area highly suitable. The spaciousness of holiday homes provides ample room, and the natural surroundings offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like exploring the beach, spotting local wildlife, and enjoying picnics by the falls.
When is the best time to go to Purakaunui?
The best time to go to Purakaunui is during the summer months, from December to February, as this period offers the warmest weather and most daylight hours.

During these months, you'll experience average temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, making it ideal for exploring the Purakaunui Falls and the surrounding native bush. The extended daylight hours, with sunsets often after 9 PM, provide ample opportunity for hiking, photography, and enjoying the coastal scenery. This is also when the local wildlife, including various bird species, is most active.

For travellers who prefer a quieter experience and don't mind cooler temperatures, the shoulder seasons of autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are also excellent. Autumn brings beautiful changing foliage, particularly around the falls, and temperatures are still mild enough for outdoor activities. Spring sees the landscape burst into bloom, and you might spot newborn lambs in the nearby paddocks.
