"Beautiful old half-timbered auberge in a small town, with a delightful aspect. The owner, Tina, was very attentive, friendly and helpful - from local sightseeing recommendations to a lovely breakfast with locally sourced items. Bed was comfortable, good shower, rooms were spacious - for a building of this age - and parking was on site and easy. If you like the photos, it definitely looks like them, and I would heartily recommend."

The hotel is conveniently situated and beautifully designed, with a large and comfortable seating area downstairs and access to a kitchen. We especially liked the design and ambience of the property and it was quiet and peaceful. The town isn't much to write home about, although has a nice cathedral. Top Portes Hotel Reviews

Hôtel du Lion d'or

10/10 Excellent

"We had a few problems on arrival as the road to the hotel had been temporarily closed. The lady on reception was extremely helpful and helped us to negotiate a different route. Our room was a double when we had booked a twin but that was also quickly resolved and we were given a very nice room with two double beds. The facilities in the room were perfect and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. On Sunday, there was a market directly outside the hotel, which we enjoyed wandering through. It is a lovely town in a beautiful area. The staff were so kind and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

Brit Hotel Rouen Sud / Val De Reuil

10/10 Excellent

"Short 3 night stay, room and hotel were clean and tidy. Staff were friendly and helpful, good continental breakfast available from early morning. No air-con in our room but not an issue due to weather not being particularly hot. Hotel was quite busy with guests but always had parking spaces available. Overall really happy with budget hotel, likely stay again when in the area."

Brit Hotel La Bonne Etape

10/10 Excellent

"This hotel did not disappoint. All we needed was an overnight stay on our way to our holiday further south. For the price we paid, we were pleasantly surprised. The room was of an adequate size, clean, with everything needed. The shower/toilet was small but clean, and the water was hot. Air conditioning was a bonus too. The hotel is situated on the edge of an industrial estate but was so quiet and peaceful. The staff made us feel very welcome. We ate in their restaurant, and the food was lovely. Really enjoyed our stay; great value for money and the staff made the stay even better. Very warm, welcoming and professional."

Norman house with pool in the countryside

10/10 Excellent

"We are just back from a week’s stay at this property. We had good communication with Cesar prior to our trip with prompt messages. We were met on arrival by the lovely housekeeper Martine. She is so nice but due to the language barrier we felt a welcome pack in English/different languages would have been beneficial, listing bin days etc. The property is stunning set in a private gated woodland. It was well equipped, well maintained and my boys particularly enjoyed the pool table. Very clean and tidy with everything we needed and we couldn’t fault it.We made use of the outdoor BBQ and were in the pool most afternoons. The pool isn’t heated, but as we were there in a heatwave we didn’t have a problem with temperature. The shallow end isn’t that shallow, and my tall 6 year old could not reach the floor. Although the pool is gorgeous and we all loved it! The property is a 5 minute drive to the nearest town which has a beautiful cathedral, patisserie, shops and cafe’s.We visited Evereux whilst we were there which is a city with plenty to do! Beautiful place with lots to see. Overall we had a fantastic stay at this property, a great holiday and we would not hesitate to recommend. Thank you to Cesar and Martine. Hannah, Chris and Boys x"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Portes?

The best area to stay in Portes is within the village itself or the immediate surrounding countryside for easy access to its main attractions.

Portes village is quite compact, centred around the impressive Château de Portes. Staying here puts you right by the historic castle, which is the main draw. You'll find a few local eateries and a small shop, and the streets are generally quiet and pleasant for a stroll.

Couples looking for a relaxing escape will find the areas just outside the village particularly appealing. Many guesthouses and B&Bs are set in converted farmhouses or manor houses, offering a peaceful setting with views of the Normandy countryside. These often come with lovely gardens and provide a tranquil base for exploring the region's history and natural beauty.

For those interested in exploring the wider Normandy region, staying in Portes offers a convenient base.

When is the best time to go to Portes?

The best time to visit Portes, Normandy, France, is during the late spring and summer months, from May to September.

This period offers the most agreeable weather, with warmer temperatures and less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the region's outdoor attractions. You'll find the countryside lush and green, and the longer daylight hours allow for more extensive sightseeing.

Couples often find June and September particularly appealing. These months typically offer pleasant weather for walks along the coast or through the local villages, without the peak crowds of July and August. It's a lovely time for enjoying al fresco dining and visiting historic sites at a more relaxed pace.

For families, the school summer holidays in July and August are a popular choice. The weather is usually at its warmest, superb for days out at the beaches or exploring the local farms and animal parks.
