Look out into the wide expanse of Tenaya Canyon from this viewpoint and see the stony sentinel of Half Dome presiding over the tree-studded valley.

The viewing area of Olmsted Point presents a remarkable panorama of the Tenaya Canyon, framed by majestic rock formations and speckled with trees. Reach Olmsted Point via a scenic trail, which leads between glacial boulders and pretty greenery to an unsurpassable lookout. Spot distinctive landforms in the wide, rocky canyon, such as Half Dome and Clouds Rest.

Follow the short walking trail, which is a 0.25-mile (0.4-kilometer) round trip. The walk has a gentle incline and should take only 15 to 30 minutes. Reaching the top of the craggy granite peak, you’ll be awestruck by the unfolding scenery. Look west for clear views of Clouds Rest mountain peak rising regally out of the valley. Beyond Clouds Rest, see the distinctive shape of Half Dome, a magnificent granite peak. Look east to take in views of the still waters of Tenaya Lake surrounded by colossal granite boulders and a dense forest of coniferous trees.

Be sure to bring your camera and take photographs of the canyon scenery and monumental rock formations. In the late afternoon, the landscape is shrouded in the pink hues of dusk, while clear mornings bring the stark contrast of blue skies and bright sunlight.

Select from a number of walking trails that branch off from the main trail. Take a stroll and enjoy views of the canyon from a different aspect. You might spot Mount Hoffman and the northern peaks.

Olmsted Point is located in the heart of Yosemite National Park on the arterial Tioga Road. Use the large parking lot at the trailhead, which also presents stunning views across the valley. Purchase snacks from the Tuolumne Meadows convenience store, 10 miles (16 kilometers) east. Find restrooms at nearby Tenaya Lake. The views from Olmsted Point are beautiful regardless of the season however, there may be a road closure on Tioga Road in the winter months due to high snowfall.
