"From the moment we arrived at Jungle Eco Lodge & Safari, we were made to feel completely at home. Kumari and her husband, Neshanta, went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. They were incredibly kind and caring towards our children, making them feel so welcome from day one. The homemade Sri Lankan breakfast was absolutely delicious, with fresh fruit picked from the beautiful trees surrounding the lodge, which Kumari uses in her cooking. The setting is peaceful and full of wildlife....

"Amazing - no other words needed! A two night stay in one of the tree houses - had the camp to ourselves , which was perfect. Staff were fabulous and went out of their way to ensure our meals were varied both in location and food . Excellent on both counts . Wild elephant encounter on our way in, had to reroute on the way out due to ele on the road (? Same guy?) . But a great detour . Just chilled in the fish spa and ate lots. "

"Really very nice home stay near to the lake and the Museum. The landlady is very helpful and does everything to make the stay comfortable . The bycicle is brought to your room, this is the best way to see the sites, also the entrance is quite near. In the evening the landlady cooks a nice curry for you - or whatever you want - and she also has beer! All in all a very agreeable stay. The bathroom could have been a little cleaner though."

Top New Town Hotel Reviews

Jetwing Vil Uyana, A Luxury Reserve

10/10 Excellent

"An absolutely incredible stay! I don’t think any hotel could beat this one. It’s absolutely beautiful from the moment you get on to the buggie and driven around the resort. It’s the type of place where you can sit in peace and watch nature and the wildlife around you. The staff were incredible and we had our own butler who organised everything for us. Food was lovely!"

Sigiriya King's Resort

10/10 Excellent

"as amazing as siguriya itself is, and it is, the staff at king's resort were the highlight. nothing was too much trouble, true professional hospitality, it was great. we were there for our 20th wedding anniversary and they made it special. sri lanka is amazing. truely. did i mention the plunge pool? you'll prob want to get that. the big pool is brilliant but the plunge pool, for us, was really special"

Kolla Watersong Eco Cabana resort

10/10 Excellent

"Such a beautiful and special place. Just be aware that it’s a bit rustic and because it’s close to the swamp, there are a lot of insects at night. But if you stay inside and don’t mind roughing it a bit, this place is such a great experience and unmatched views and environment. Amazing owner and staff, always so eager to please. Even cooked us a fabulous dinner!"

Hotel Sigiriya

10/10 Excellent

"This is a large hotel and there did seem to be a couple of large groups staying there but this did not detract from our experience. Nice rooms with everything you could need, water readily provided. The pool is ok but the selling point for it is the fantastic view of Lions Rock. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the buffet had a good selection of food to suit all palates. Breakfast was excellent, you can choose Sri Lankan or more western options. Plenty of choice. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel."

Kassapa Lion Rock

10/10 Excellent

"We accidentally found this fabulous hotel due to sudden change of our vacation plan. Hotel is located in very calm quiet area within 10 km from Sigiriya local ticketing office. We had an unexpectedly wonderful time in the hotel. The staff were very welcoming and supportive. Hotel has two well maintained pools and beautiful restaurant. Room and the whole hotel was very clean. Foods are so delicious as well. Highly recommend for couples or anyone would like to spend true relax time before or after climbing the Sigiriya rock. This place deserves more than five stars. I encourage more locals to explore these beautiful places around the country."

Sunshine Resort and Spa

10/10 Excellent

"Our hosts were welcoming and delightful. The hospitality made our visit of Sigiriya most memorable. The rooms were clean and the food was fresh and delicious. With ease of access to the restaurants, and of course Lion's Rock, we took in the sunrise from a most impressive ancient civilization! Highly recommended."

Cinnamon Lodge

10/10 Excellent

"An absolutely wonderful hotel, with a calm, serene atmosphere, that blends in beautifully with it's surroundings. Cinnamon Lodge is the antitheses of a generic, bland, modern hotel, which exudes a sense of unfussy sophistication. The Cinnamon Group's website does not do justice to the architecture or to how lovely the grounds are. The architect took inspiration from the ruins of nearby Ritigala temple (well worth a visit), and it's amazing how comfortably the buildings blend in with the vast grounds. The rooms are huge and nicely furnished, without being "glitzy". We stayed in a suite that was essentially a two story house, and comes with your own butler - in our case Lalith, who made our stay complete - reserving tables, remembering your favourite drink and generally anticipating your every need. The food was consistently excellent over our five night stay. The staff are all warm, charming and do their best to make your stay a memorable one. They are led by an excellent management team, who are visible, approachable and highly competent. Our stand-out memory is of the wildlife - not just at the nearby national parks, but within the hotel grounds. Incredible bird-life, monkeys, monitor lizards, and even an elephant beside the lake. This was all brought to life for us by the hotel's resident naturalist team (in particular Kintu), and we recommend you seek out their expertise. An oasis of calm, in the heart of the cultural triangle."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in New Town?

The best area to stay in New Town, North Central Province, Sri Lanka, is generally along the main roads and around the central market area, offering convenience and access to amenities.

This central area is practical for visitors as it's where you'll find most of the hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants. The main roads, like the A9, provide straightforward access to the historical sites of Anuradhapura and other regional attractions. You'll find a range of local shops and eateries here, making it easy to grab essentials or a meal.

For families, staying near the New Town centre is a good choice. It provides easy access to local markets for snacks and everyday items, and transport links to the ancient city are readily available. Hotels in this area often have facilities like swimming pools, which can be a welcome relief after a day of exploring.

Couples looking for a comfortable base will also appreciate the convenience of this area. It offers a good selection of accommodation options, from well-appointed hotels to more intimate guesthouses, many of which can arrange tours to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites.

When is the best time to go to New Town?

The best time to visit New Town, North Central Province, Sri Lanka, is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September.

During these months, you'll experience pleasant weather with less humidity and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the ancient ruins and outdoor attractions. The daily temperatures are warm, usually around 28-32°C, great for sightseeing without the interruption of heavy showers. This period ensures comfortable conditions for activities like cycling around the archaeological sites or climbing Sigiriya Rock.

For travellers interested in wildlife, visiting during the dry season is particularly beneficial. Animals congregate around the shrinking water sources in national parks such as Minneriya and Kaudulla, making them easier to spot on a safari. This is a great time for couples and families to see elephants and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
