Chiaia
Mingle with the locals in the historic park, explore the little aquarium or gaze out to sea from this stylish part of the Italian city of “Napoli.”

Chiaia, sitting just to the west of the city center, stands out because it is a more upmarket part of Naples. It is where you will find the Villa Comunale, the former royal villa with gardens that once lined the seafront. This large public park and the surrounding culture, dining and shopping options make Chiaia a popular part of the city.

Begin your visit with a walk along the Lungomare, Chiaia’s long oceanfront esplanade, to take in the views and enjoy the atmosphere. Views out across the bay take in the conical peak of Vesuvius and the island of Capri in the distance. If you wish to stretch out in the sun, head to the rocky shoreline near the Rotunda Diaz that has a small section of beach behind a breakwater.

Cross over to the parklands of the Villa Comunale and stroll in the shade of the plane and pine trees. Stop often to admire the graceful statues and fountains dotted throughout the park. You are walking in the footsteps of King Ferdinand IV who created the Villa Comunale in the late 18th century. It remained private and for royal use only until 1869, when it was opened to the public after the unification of Italy.

Discover the underwater world in one of Europe’s oldest aquariums. The little Anton Dohrn Zoological Station was founded in 1872 and doubles as the Sea Turtle Research Center. The aquarium may be little, but local scientists use it for research, education and conservation in collaboration with international partners.

Treat yourself to a meal or a drink at one of Chiaia’s many excellent cafés or restaurants. Whether you choose pasta, cured meats, cheese or local wine and beer, the fresh southern Italian food doesn’t disappoint. Buy a sweet gelato for dessert and stroll back to the park to watch the world go by.

When the evening rolls in, the locals come out to stroll along the waterfront, often dressed up in their finest. Join them in this passeggiata ritual or watch them go by as you sip on a glass of fine Italian wine. The Italians know how to live the good life and here in Chiaia they will show you how to do it in style.
