Learn about his life and artistic career. Walk uphill from the small village of Fodele past orange trees and ancient stone cottages and you will come to the Museum of El Greco. Step inside to learn about the life of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco, who is said to have been born here. Admire the reproductions of his distinctive works and find out about his life as an artist in Spain. Enjoy a drink or a small meal in the adjoining café before making your way back for a stroll around the village El Greco called home. The Museum of El Greco is housed in a small, stone cottage, said to be the house where El Greco was born in 1541\. It opened to the public in 1998 and serves a dual purpose as a gallery portraying copies of some of his best-known works and a museum detailing the various aspects of his life. Enter the quaint stone building to see several reproductions of Theotokopoulos’ work hanging on the walls. The paintings are grouped together by color. You’ll soon see why the artist was renowned for his bold use of the artist’s palette. Note also his trademark elongated faces in many of the religious paintings. In many respects El Greco was ahead of his time in his techniques it wasn’t until the 20th century that the wider art community really began to appreciate his work. Step outside and enjoy a drink and a local snack in the small café that adjoins the house. The vivid colors of the stonework, the orange trees and the blooms that surround you no doubt provided El Greco with early inspiration. Don’t miss the bust of the great man himself, which sits proudly outside the entrance of the museum. The Museum of El Greco is located just over half a mile (1 kilometer) from the center of Fodele. The property is on the hillside giving gorgeous views. I was nervous about dragging my suitcase up the hill but I was met in the parking area and everything was taken care of for me proactively. They have a lovely bar/restaurant area with a good selection of food and wine. You can't go wrong booking this wonderful property. (142 reviews) Stayed as a family of 4 for 9 days in mid August 2025, 2 adults and 2 children. Positives: Remote hill top location in Old Town Malia (10/10). Villas with private 10m to 15m length pools (10/10). Overall the teams were very helpful and did their best to support. Amazing views of Malia from your balcony from the hill top location (10/10). Notable mentions; Alexia at the front desk, New lady in the restaurant from Romania, Male supervisor / manager who helped us after we got locked out of the villa with 2 keys at night. Private pool chemical level being checked. Met the new owner at dinner whilst the teams were stressfully trying to work out our bill for a new menu and he said he his aware of what they need to improve on and service is not were he wants it to be. Negatives: Attention to detail I.e. 1 bed was missing its top cover for the first 3 nights. Very easy to lock yourself out of the villa because of the safety feature on the doors. Service in the restaurant needs to be improved / missed opportunity from the hotel due to isolated location. Catering options are very limited / Menu cards are confusing / Not clear what you have ordered and what you are paying for. Nightly disturbances from staffing quarters into the early morning (stayed in villa 407). No locks on the bathroom or toilet doors. Hot water in the tap & shower is extremely boiling hot. Toilet / Shower room on the lower floor in the 2 bedroom villas should have a solid divider as water gets everywhere.
