"Somewhat mixed feelings. We arrived and the budget room we had booked was tiny and had no draw space to put clothes and only a rail to hang things. We requested a larger room and got one at an extra cost which was fine. The location was stunning over looking a field of sunflowers (its a shame they had gone past their best. We chose the hotel as it was out of the town but had a restaurant, unfortunately it was not open on the night we arrived (Friday night!) so we had to walk the busy road...

Domaine du Château de Monrecour – Hôtel et Restaurant

10/10 Excellent

"Lovely old property close to towns in the scenic Dordogne. A car is essential. We stayed in the old castle which was charming. Excellent restaurant - be sure to book ahead."

Manoir de la Malartrie

10/10 Excellent

"We love this property, Waffa the proprietor was so sweet and helpful. She helped us make reservations and the breakfast each morning was the best we’ve ever had. Don’t miss out on staying at this property if you are in the area. Also, they served us wine and appetizers in their outdoor bar near the heated pool! Quaint and delicious."

Château Hôtel Edward 1er

10/10 Excellent

"Exceptional Stay Once Again at Château Hôtel Edward We recently returned for another stay at Château Hôtel Edward, and it continues to exceed our expectations. Having stayed here previously, we are consistently impressed by the standard of excellence maintained across the board. The staff is truly outstanding—attentive, highly trained, and always going above and beyond to make every guest feel warmly welcomed and well cared for. Dining at the restaurant was a highlight of our trip. The food was excellent, paired with a well-curated selection of drinks that made each meal feel special. Château Hôtel Edward never fails to deliver a memorable, high-quality experience. We look forward to returning again soon and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a flawless getaway!"

Very good location! Character house with private access to the river

10/10 Excellent

"Lovely property with a fantastic pool and sun loungers/parasols and a table tennis table. We really enjoyed our stay at Ariane's place. Ariane was very good at responding to messages, check in was very smooth and she had even, kindly, got in some provisions for us as we arrived on a Sunday when most places were closed. Thank you very much Ariane!"

Maison de Campagne Avec Piscine

10/10 Excellent

"The house is in a beautiful, peaceful, rural location but only a 5-minute drive to the restaurants, bars and shops of Villereal (which is a very beautiful town). The house is pet-friendly and our dog loved the large garden to chase her ball or explore. Bernard, the host showed us around on arrival and provided help if we needed anything, but was not intrusive. We received a welcome gift on arrival, which was a very kind gesture. Although, Bernard and his family live next door, the house is very private and all facilities are exclusively for guests. The house was very clean and comfortable and provided everything needed for a relaxing holiday. It was also nice and cool inside, but the air conditioning was very much appreciated when the temperatures soared. The garden, pool area and outside terraces were lovely areas for relaxing or enjoying an evening meal or drink. The house is perfectly located for visiting the nearby towns of the Dordogne and Lot, many within a 15-minute drive. We would definitely recommend it to other travellers looking for accommodation in the area."

Domaine de Malet

10/10 Excellent

"We had a fantastic stay at Domaine Le Malet. The surroundings are truly beautiful. The host was very friendly. There were a couple of things that could have been improved as feedback for the host - 1. Communication at breakfast. We weren't aware we were able to bring breakfast out onto the terrace. This is a shame as we were only there for 1 night and this would have been much nicer than indoors. We saw others dining there only after we had already had breakfast. 2. There is a rule that you cannot have drinks in the pool area. I totally understand this if it is due to glass, but a solution would be to serve drinks in plastic cups instead as I did mention before ordering that we were sat at the pool. Many people on holiday like to have a drink by the pool, but instead we had to move to drink our drinks."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Marou?

The best area to stay in Marou is the coastal strip around Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons, as these offer the most convenient access to beaches, dining, and activities.

Anse Vata is Marou's most well-known beach area, stretching along the Promenade Roger Laroque. It's characterised by its wide sandy beach, calm waters great for swimming, and a variety of watersport activities available directly from the shore, such as stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing. The promenade itself is lined with hotels, restaurants, and cafes, making it very walkable and easy to find places to eat or relax.

Couples often find Anse Vata ideal for a relaxing yet engaging holiday. You'll find a good selection of quality resorts and boutique hotels here, many with sea views and amenities like swimming pools and high-end fitness equipment. The area also offers several fine dining options, great for an evening out, and it's easy to catch a water taxi to nearby Duck Island for a day trip.

Baie des Citrons, just a short walk or drive from Anse Vata, offers a slightly more intimate beach experience. It's known for its horseshoe-shaped bay and a lively evening scene with beachfront restaurants and bars. While smaller than Anse Vata, it's particularly popular for its sheltered waters, which are excellent for families with younger children due to the gentle waves.

Families with children would appreciate Baie des Citrons for its calm waters and the convenience of having numerous casual dining options right on the beach. Many establishments offer outdoor seating, allowing parents to keep an eye on their children playing in the sand.
