Known for its extensive and varied retail opportunities, York’s large municipality also has sprawling parkland and great golf courses.

Shop for digital devices or explore streets of quirky, historic stores to find antique gems in Markham. Cycle through leafy passageways and past serene ponds. Play golf at one of the country’s most renowned courses.

Markham’s shopping draws visitors from across Ontario. Amble around the various districts to get to know the town. Markham has been labeled the high-tech capital of Canada. Markville Shopping Center certainly has an impressive selection of gadgets. More than 200 shops have the latest phones, tablets and televisions along with clothing and accessories.

For a more old-town atmosphere, head to Unionville, a 5-minute drive west. The narrow streets here are lined with preserved storefronts that will transport you back to the late 19th and early 20th century. The mystique continues as you step inside to find boutique products including gorgeous antique furniture, jewelry and handmade confectionary. Attend the farmers market that takes place at Markham Village every Saturday between May and September.

After a morning among the crowds, find peace and quiet at Toogood Park, a 10-minute walk north from Unionville. Lie in the sun in front of tall pine trees or gaze into the pond to spot darting fish. Crosby and Carlton Park nearby have space to play soccer and baseball or hop on a bike and go for a ride. The council has opened more than 12 miles (18 kilometers) of trails, many slipping away from urban areas into delightful valleys of flowers and gently running streams.

Golfers should check out Angus Glen Golf Club, the site of the 2002 Canadian Open. Play a few holes here or try out Crest Haven Golf Club down the road.

Markham is part of Greater Toronto, 30 minutes north of the city center. Find hotels in both the middle and outskirts of town and plenty of restaurants in the shopping areas. Come for the Markham fair on the weekend before Thanksgiving. See rodeo riding and monster truck racing as well as music and livestock exhibitions.

Markham is very beautiful. A lot of business and housing developments underway. The public transportation isnt very efficient but it seems most people drive so that may be why. I loved mainstreet markham it has a homey, small town feel, beautiful.
