Nice hotel in a GREAT location

Posted 26-May-2017
Pros: Location was great and room was clean.
Cons: Room fridge did not work. We mentioned it to someone at the desk and they said that it was working and wouldn't check it out.
Hotel is in a lovely building with a bus stop just a few doors down the street. Baker Street station and Marble Arch station are within easy walking distance. Lots of restaurants are just a block over on Baker Street. The staff was very nice. Do be warned that there is NO lift, so be ready for the stairs after a long day of wandering around London. They lock the outside door at 11pm when the desk is not staffed. I would stay here again.

Convenient location, helpful staff, safe environme

Posted 6-Apr-2017
I stayed for a week, and each day my room was cleaned and its supplies replenished. The staff were friendly and helpful. Okay, there's no lift, but as the guidebook says, these kinds of hotels are historic! I would definitely return here, because I also felt safe and secure. Thank you, St. George crew!

Nice time on a budget.

Posted 15-Feb-2017 on Hotels
We enjoyed a week-long stay. The room was standard size by European standards. We booked a room with a King bed, which was fantastic, but the foam pillows were not great. The bath room was small, especially the shower. The location was a seven minute walk from the center of Oxford street,

An Oasis of a Hotel

Posted 1-Feb-2017 on Hotels
This hotel is like an oasis in the middle of a very buzzing district. It was very homely, very sweet and very cute. The room was very clean and the staff extremely helpful. I just cannot believe how quiet this room actually was. The breakfast for £10 was amazing. It was a sheer pleasure to be there. There is a little conservatory and downstairs breakfast room. I really cannot recommend this hotel enough.

Great location, disappointing hotel

Posted 17-Jan-2017
Pros: Not much. Location is great.
Cons: Everything, lift first of all, water pressure, heating, shower, towels, sheets
Location: Location is great especially if you land at Luton airport, the bus stop is on Baker Street. Oxford street is close by as is Hyde park, tube
I have stayed in many London hotels and this was the worst. On arrival late in the day we were greeted in the small reception and told our room was on the 3rd floor. This has not prepared us to the journey upstairs, no help offered, narrow stairs and at the end a winding staircase, not easy with a large suitcase. There are 4 bedrooms on that floor so avoid them, numbers 10-14. There is poor water pressure, trickle of water, poor quality towels, old ran down shower. Heating in the room was unbelievably hot, like a sauna, had to complain several times before it was finally turned down completely. The room was still hot without it.

Tired room

Posted 27-Nov-2016 on Hotels
Room was tired and dirty with cracked tiles in the bathroom and dirty carpet . The mattress in the bed was very soft and springy. Not good quality and had seen better days. The shower hose was not long enough to stand under and consequently a crouching shower position had to be adopted. I stay in hotels 2-3 times a week and this is the first review I have ever left. Primarily thus is due to the fact that when I mentioned these items on check out, I was informed that they were looking into upgrading at some point. Nice to hear but until then don't sell a room at £134 that is in that condition.

Renovations Needed but Good Location

Posted 26-Nov-2016
Pros: Staff was quite pleasant. The shower worked and provided hot water. The shower head should be cleaned w/LimeAway (or replaced). Good location.
Cons: Replace worn mattress & mattress pad, change location of TV, install new carpeting or faux wood floor, new vanity light, soak shower head in LimeAway.
Location: Very walkable-Selfridges, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis (Oxford St). Baker St has SBux, Pret & inexpensive restaurants. Marble Arch station-3 blks away.
I stayed at the St. George with a friend once before, which was why I booked the same hotel again. Last time the room was adequate for the cost. This time the room was very disappointing. Dirty walls. The carpeting is thread bare in several areas; the floor beneath is uneven. Instructions in the Guest Manual for room safe were completely incorrect. Safe required a key to be opened and closed. The TV remote would not operate from the bed due to the height of the wall-mounted TV. Channels and sound had to be changed manually or while standing up. The lumpy bed was the worst part. There was hole in the sheet. The mattress pad was so worn out that it failed to cover the 3/4" buttons on the mattress. Trying to sleep the first night was useless. I asked the staff for a blanket, folded that blanket in half and placed the blanket between the sheet and the mattress for the remainder of my stay. Heat was also an issue. Although there were 2 portable heaters in the room (the wheels on one of the heaters were broken). It took an hour to heat the room. I doubt this is hotel will make the investment to improve their property and will always remain a 2-star hotel. Subsequent to my stay, I met a black cab driver on the plane who was familiar with St. George property. He stated that ALL the properties on Gloucester are in need of repair based on what he has heard from his cab clients. His advice was to stay on Portman instead.
