With eight period rooms and many exhibits, this museum offers a great glimpse into early European life in eastern Canada.

Equally as astounding from the inside as it is from the garden, the Heritage House Museum is a fantastic reminder of the ways of life that have disappeared with time. This Victorian House in Smiths Falls features eight period rooms, with each given the utmost attention to detail.

You’ll find it hard to believe that the walls of the Heritage House Museum were once tattered and damaged, the only remnants of the historic property. Years of hard work and dedication have provided visitors with a glimpse into their local history. Today the site attracts visitors from near and far.

Before you explore the museum, wander through the picturesque gardens that surround the house. Pack a picnic to enjoy on the rolling grass, letting the stunning home be the background to your lunch. Embark on a short walk through the grounds to reach the Rideau Canal and the lock station nearby.

Venture inside the museum to explore history. The home dates back to 1867 and gives an example of the sophisticated lifestyles enjoyed by the affluent citizens of Perth during the 19th century. After you inspect the eight fully furnished rooms, complete with historic artifacts and fittings, take some time to visit the temporary exhibits housed within the museum.

See local artists on display, stop by the gift shop for Ontarian handicrafts and souvenirs and check the museum program to see if any special events are being hosted during your stay. On the grounds you’ll find picnic benches, landscaped gardens and a double-story privy.

The Heritage House Museum is located next to Lower Reach Park on the banks of the Rideau Canal. It can be reached by car with free parking available on site. From May until December the museum is open daily but it closes on weekends from early January until the end of April. There is an admission fee.
