There are path ways to follow once you leave the parking lot, but not sure where it ends. I usually off road it and set out for the walking the rocks. Nothing extreme, sneakers with a good grip or bucking boots; foot flops if you want to be a risk taker. In my childhood days we used to play in the water near the edges. I'm sure it gets deep in parts but I don't venture into anything I can't see the bottom of. Not 100% if full on water engulfment is allowed park rangers can be seen at times. Other than heavy rainfall or excessive snow accumulation, I have personally never seen either river way raging. There are snakes that like to sunbathe on rocks, fallen tree branches, even just snuggled up near a bench. Use caution and be respectful of the wildlife and all should be well. There are a select few picnic tables and possible some grills to use. No trash cans on the walkways so plea as be considerate and take all trash with you when you leave.
