Maze to find room from reception

The Spa area was brilliant other than we did not know from hotel reception that to use the flip flops and robes in room for the spa as they are not available in the changing rooms as mentioned on their website. The hotel is a bit of a maze to your room and walls and floor above was noisy. you could hear the water running from another persons room which isnt so go when booked an executive room rather than standard. the same door banging that happens in all hotels never seems to change. We always seemed to smell cigarette smoke in the corridors because fire e it doors were open and appeared guests may have been doing this which was very unpleasant. The meal in the evening was lovely and service was very good. breakfast seemed to be very busy and staff running around everywhere, perhaps additional staff if know it will be busy? breakfast portion of half an english muffin with a poached egg seemed a little on the scrimped side but we also had plenty of toast provided so not too much of an issue. Interesting to serve coffee in the little teapots rather than bring around with fresh but worked well. room was very warm and the quilt/duvet was too large for the size of the bed.

Nothing like the pictures!

The pictures for this hotel are heavily orientated around the onsite spa and are not particularly representative of the hotel. Whilst the spa is very nice and obviously a newly added, £25 per person per night seems a bit of a steep for use of a pool, jacuzzi and stream room. The hotel itself is old and in need of a revamp. The first room we were given was cold and smelly and in desperate need of a face lift. The second was marginally better, but could still do with modernising. Overall it felt like the hotel was a wedding venue first, and a hotel second. On the plus side, the hotel is on the doorstep to the Cotswolds, and a taxi into Gloucester was only £9 so the location was good.

  • Disliked: Room comfort

The water was only lukewarm in the bath/shower which wasn't great in February. I spoke to several other guests who had experienced the same thing. The heating wasn't on in the room when I arrived so it was pretty cold. The hotel states that it is 'first class' in its literature in the room but the paintwork needs a lot of attention. The furniture had also clearly seen better days. Overall it was fine and convenient as I was staying for a conference, but nothing special at all and not worth the price. Just a bit shabby. On a positive note the staff were very attentive and friendly at breakfast. The car park also needs cleaning up/draining - it's very muddy!
