Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Funaya?
The best area to stay in Funaya is directly along the Ine Bay waterfront, particularly in the central part of the village where the traditional funaya boat houses are most concentrated.

This area is the heart of Funaya, characterised by its unique wooden boathouses built right over the water, each with a boat garage on the ground floor and living quarters above. The main road, Prefectural Route 20, runs parallel to the bay, offering direct access to these properties. You'll find a few local eateries and souvenir shops interspersed among the funaya.

Couples looking for a distinctive and tranquil experience will find staying in a funaya particularly appealing. Many of these traditional houses have been converted into guest accommodations, offering direct views of the bay and the opportunity to wake up to the gentle sounds of the water. It's an ideal setting for a romantic getaway, allowing for quiet evenings watching the fishing boats.

For those interested in local culture and a slower pace of travel, staying in this central funaya area provides an authentic glimpse into the daily life of a fishing village. You can observe the local fishermen and enjoy fresh seafood at the local restaurants.
When is the best time to go to Funaya?
The best time to visit Funaya is during the spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) months.

Spring in Funaya brings pleasant temperatures and clearer skies, making it ideal for exploring the unique boathouses and enjoying boat tours. The surrounding cherry blossoms add a beautiful touch to the scenic coastal landscape. This period is great for couples seeking a romantic getaway, with opportunities for serene walks and dining with picturesque views.

Autumn offers equally comfortable weather, with crisp air and stunning views of the changing foliage in the nearby hills. It's a great time for those who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or cycling along the coast. Solo travellers will find this season particularly appealing for its calm atmosphere and opportunities for quiet reflection while enjoying the natural beauty.
