![The area around Koggala is one of the best places on Sri Lanka's south coast to see traditional stilt fishermen in action. This famed practice has become one of the most distinctive sights of Sri Lanka. It started just after World War II, when the rocks and shoreline became too crowded so as a result fishermen started using the ship and aircraft wrecks to fish. This developed to fixed stilts in the shoreline for fishermen to use and pass on to the next generation.

![Ritipanna is the Sinhalese term for stilt fishing, which is a traditional method for fishing practiced by most fishermen along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This art is popularly seen in areas such as Ahangama, Koggala, Welipenna,  Kathaluwa and Thalarambe. A narrow pole is tied to a stick that is anchored on the sea bed. Fisher folk climb onto this stick and settle on the pole for a few hours in an effort to catch some fish.

Fishermen found on stilts are those who do not have access to sophisticated equipment for fishing. These men can make a living simply with the help of two wooden poles to make a stilt. One pole is nailed onto the sea bed and the other is placed like a cross bar and acts as a plank for the fishermen to sit on. Each stilt can accommodate only one fisherman. For catching fish, they create a rod made of Kithul, and a small plastic bag is tied around their waist to hold the fish that they catch. With one hand they hold onto the stilt and with the other they hold the rod that catches fish. « This place is a dream, the domain is so beautiful and well maintained. Room was super nice and well designed. The infinity pool is absolutely magical. Only a couple of things to note, it’s quite remote so tuktuk fees are to be expected (don’t book via hotel to avoid paying double) and restaurant serves expensive fusion food only. »

« I had a really wonderful time at Tabula Rasa. Felt like the staff couldn’t do enough to ensure my stay was perfect. The location is stunning. It is worth being located up hill in the peace and quiet, and so easy to pop out in a tuk tuk. The food was really good, I expected to eat out more but, I’d often crave the chef’s dhal! I was able to eat really good plant based meals without getting bored of the menu. The chef would come out to chat, and was very keen to ensure I enjoyed the food. All...

« We stayed for 2 nights, and we both thought that the food and the public areas were amazing. We also booked the yoga classes which were great. The bungalows are very cool, they are open, so you get a pretty unique experience. The beds are a bit on the hard side, this should be improved. »

« Amazing hotel. Great staff, very boutique feeling with amazing decoration (balinese style). We stayed with our 3 children (9,7,2) in a family room, room 206, and the hotel felt perfect for kids. The pool has a shallow area, the beach area is safe and the hotel lended us some bodyboards for our older kids to play with in the sea. Note that the bedroom balcony doors do not close 100% by design so you will heqr the waves at all time (which we liked to go to sleep) but it may not be for everybody....

« Wir verbringen gerade einige Tage in der Villa Alba. Es ist eines der schönsten Hotels, in denen ich je war! Das offene Design, mitten in der Natur, eins mit der Umgebungen und den dort lebenden Tieren - es ist einmalig. Es ist total ruhig gelegen aber trotzdem nicht weit zum Stadtkern. Die Zimmer sind super groß, bequeme Betten, man hat alles, was notwendig ist. Das Personal ist so lieb und zuvorkommend. Unsere Reise verspätete sich aufgrund des Fluges etwas, aber der liebe Sicherheitsmann hat...

« Large rooms with comfortable bed right on the beach. Easy walking to many tourist shops and many restaurants. Lots of fresh seafood available from these restaurants. Staff was very friendly and eager to help with a smile. The restaurant prepared a seafood grill each night and set tables with candies at the edge of the surf. Breakfast was very good with lots of fruit and an omelette station as well as curry. Can’t go wrong staying here. »

« At the end of our Sri Lanka holiday we decided to spend a bit more on our Unawatuna hotel & were not disappointed. We had large rooms with loads of space, kitchen, really comfy beds, excellent views from our balconies. The staff were helpful & the pool lovely. We did book nicer rooms that some there & didn't eat so can't comment on the food. It's a bit of a walk or a short Tuk Tuk ride to the main tourist area or a beach but that also means it's quiet there. »

"Amazing hotel. Great staff, very boutique feeling with amazing decoration (balinese style). We stayed with our 3 children (9,7,2) in a family room, room 206, and the hotel felt perfect for kids. The pool has a shallow area, the beach area is safe and the hotel lended us some bodyboards for our older kids to play with in the sea. Note that the bedroom balcony doors do not close 100% by design so you will heqr the waves at all time (which we liked to go to sleep) but it may not be for everybody. Would definitely come back! Thank you"
