What is the best area to stay in Desert Road?
The best area to stay near Desert Road is the town of Taupō, which offers the most comprehensive range of accommodation, dining, and activities for travellers.Taupō is situated on the northern end of Lake Taupō, New Zealand's largest lake. The town's main street, Tongariro Street, runs parallel to the lakefront, with hotels, restaurants, and shops branching off it. It's a convenient base for exploring the wider region, including the Tongariro National Park, which Desert Road traverses. For couples looking for a relaxed yet comfortable stay, the hotels along the lakefront in Taupō are an excellent option. Many offer stunning views of the lake and mountains, and you're just a short walk from the town's eateries and the scenic lakeside path. When is the best time to go to Desert Road?

The higher temperatures make outdoor activities, such as short walks at scenic viewpoints, much more pleasant. You'll also find that the risk of snow and ice, which can sometimes close the road in winter, is lower. For those planning to combine their Desert Road journey with exploring the Tongariro National Park, this timeframe is ideal. The popular Tongariro Alpine Crossing is best attempted during these months when the trails are typically free of snow and the conditions are more predictable.
