"Extremely local chinese hotel. English speaking staff were far and few. Staff all hesitant and not confident to deal with foreigners so the communication was a struggle. But everyone was nice and polite. The common areas are not well maintained (i.e. lobby) so if you are looking for an upscale experience this is not your place. Most importantly the operations and management of the place is very poor. Everyone was all over the place. It was a mess. The team couldn’t manage the guests and it...

Top Dali City Hotel Reviews

Hilton Garden Inn Dali Ancient City

8/10 Good

"i stayed here for a visit with friends and was happy with it. the hotel is clean and comfortable with surprisingly large rooms. it's more of a group-tour hotel with lots of tour buses around - but good value for a comfortable room located near some of the major sights in Dali. The breakfast was very good. I'd recommend it for someone who wants affordable comfort while exploring Dali."

Clouds Villa

"Extremely local chinese hotel. English speaking staff were far and few. Staff all hesitant and not confident to deal with foreigners so the communication was a struggle. But everyone was nice and polite. The common areas are not well maintained (i.e. lobby) so if you are looking for an upscale experience this is not your place. Most importantly the operations and management of the place is very poor. Everyone was all over the place. It was a mess. The team couldn’t manage the guests and it affected our enjoyment and experience."

Dali Taoxi Secret Manor

10/10 Excellent

"Dali Taoxi Secret Manor is easily one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The whole place feels like paradise with its beautiful gardens, and looking out at the mountains every morning was just stunning. My room was amazing and very well thought out. It had a fantastic bed, a wonderful bathroom, and a nice little courtyard. My spot right next to the main hall was perfect, and the mountain view from the room was incredible. Breakfast was great every morning—always fresh, delicious, and consistent. The location is also very good. It is an easy 10-minute walk past some nice old shops right to the gate of Dali Old Town, so it’s close to everything but still quiet. The best part of all was the staff. They really know what they are doing. They were warm, helpful, and genuine, but they also knew when to give you your space and when to offer help. A truly wonderful place. I couldn't have asked for a better stay."

The Windyard Kazan Onsen Hotel-Private Hot Spring Bathtub close to South Gate of Dali Ancient Town

8/10 Good

"It was a good stay for us, the room was clean, staff very friendly, but if you are a non smoker, there's second hand smoke in the breakfast area or common areas, which is typical of most properties as the staff smoke. The breakfast is suited for Chinese travelers, so if you are accustomed to a western style breakfast, you won't find it here."

SIXI GOLDEN SUNRISE SOUND SLEEP HOTEL

8/10 Good

"The hotel was very clean and the gentleman working behind the front desk was very friendly and tried his very best to help with questions we had about traveling around Dali. The hotel is right in the middle of Dali Ancient City, so if that's what you want the location is excellent. It's a bit of a ride to the train station, but Didi's are very affordable. The hotel is very hard to find and the translation for the name of the hotel from English to Mandarin doesn't give the right name of the hotel. It took us awhile to find the hotel and even our DiDi driver from the airport didn't know the name of the hotel, somehow we found it. It's a small boutique hotel with clean rooms, comfortable bed, and breakfast made to order. Overall it was a good stay for the price."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Dali Town?

The best area to stay in Dali Town is within the ancient city walls, particularly around Fuxing Road and Renmin Road, for a convenient and culturally rich experience.

This central area is the heart of Dali and is superb for visitors who want to be close to everything. It's easily walkable, with traditional architecture, bustling markets, and a wide array of local eateries and craft shops. Fuxing Road is the main thoroughfare, stretching from the South Gate to the North Gate, while Renmin Road is known for its more relaxed atmosphere and independent boutiques.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway will find the ancient city particularly appealing. The narrow, stone-paved streets, traditional courtyards, and numerous tea houses offer a charming setting for leisurely strolls and intimate dinners. You're also just a short distance from the dramatic Cangshan Mountains, visible from many parts of the town.

For visitors interested in history and local culture, staying within the ancient city walls provides unparalleled access to temples, museums, and traditional performances.

When is the best time to go to Dali Town?

The best time to visit Dali Town is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is most pleasant.

During these periods, you'll experience mild temperatures and less rain, making it ideal for exploring the ancient town and its surroundings. Spring brings blooming flowers, especially around Erhai Lake, while autumn offers clear skies and comfortable conditions for hiking the Cangshan Mountains.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities and sightseeing without the intense summer heat or winter chill, these seasons provide the superb balance.
