Our Bach. Fish, ski or relax in an amazing alpine setting!

10/10 Excellent
"Bach is very nicely presented with excellent amenities and a good lounge area by the fireplace. Kitchen has everything you need for a short stay. Location is great for fishing and exploring the wider Lake Coleridge region. Sally provided us with additional firewood to take up and good advice on the local area. Fishing excellent and a very enjoyable stay."

Welcome to Your Peaceful Canterbury 4 bedroom farm escape in Sheffield

Welcome to Your Peaceful Canterbury 4 bedroom farm escape in Sheffield

8/10 Good
"The place was lovely, with a beautiful view of the mountains. It was really spacious as well with lots of space inside, and super warm with the fireplace and underfloor heating. Biggest thing was it was a bit different to what was listed, the bunk beds aren't there anymore and we'd taken that into consideration when choosing the spot and there were spare mattresses but no spare linen. So now there are just x3 queen beds and x1 king bed, or bring your own linen for the mattresses. What was a nice surprise though is the listing suggested there was only one toilet, there are actually 3 toilets and two showers. There are also no curtains which didn't bother us as we are up quite early anyways and it was warm enough, but something to consider if we went back in summer. Overall would recommend and I'd go back."

Mountain Village Bach

Mountain Village Bach

8/10 Good
"It's lovely basic bach and comes with a functional kitchen with stove tops and oven. It's near Arthur's Pass railway station and was not positively surprised with the amount of train traffic late at night and early morning, not ideal for light sleepers. Surroundings are stunning though especially with the fresh snow on the mountains. Walking distance to the village."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Craigieburn Forest Park?
The best area to stay in Craigieburn Forest Park is within the park itself, particularly around the main ski fields and hiking trailheads. For those looking for direct access to outdoor activities, staying at accommodation near the ski fields like Broken River or Craigieburn Valley Ski Area is ideal. These lodges are typically located amongst the beech forest, offering a secluded experience with immediate access to hiking trails in the summer and skiing in the winter. They often feature communal living spaces and kitchens, which are great for independent travellers keen to prepare their own meals.Couples or small groups who appreciate a more structured and comfortable stay might prefer hotels or motels in the nearby village of Castle Hill (Kura Tawhiti). This small settlement offers a few more amenities than the ski field lodges, including some dining options, and provides a good base for exploring the wider area, including the distinctive limestone rock formations. It's a short drive into the heart of Craigieburn Forest Park from here.
When is the best time to go to Craigieburn Forest Park?
The best time to go to Craigieburn Forest Park depends on your preferred activities, but generally, the summer months from December to February offer the most accessible and varied experiences.During summer, the weather is typically warm and dry, making it ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the park's many trails. The alpine flora is in full bloom, adding to the scenery, and longer daylight hours allow for extended adventures. This is a great time for families looking to enjoy outdoor activities together.Autumn (March to May) also provides pleasant conditions with cooler temperatures and often stable weather, making it a good choice for those who prefer hiking without the summer crowds. The changing colours of the deciduous trees, particularly around Lake Pearson, offer stunning photographic opportunities.Winter (June to August) transforms the park into a snowy wonderland, making it superb for skiing and snowboarding at the nearby ski fields. While many hiking trails may be snow-covered, this season appeals greatly to winter sports enthusiasts.Spring (September to November) sees the snow melting and rivers swelling, which can be excellent for white-water rafting and kayaking.
