This hotel is in a building that’s over 100 years old and it is not in the best condition. I like that, because most motels these days all look like they had the same father. Ymir isn’t even large enough to be called a Village. There’s the hotel, a small general store, next-door, and the bakery that hopes to re-open someday, and nothing more. The Ymir Hotel has an impressive life, funky and eccentric atmosphere. I found it intriguingly curious and an enjoyable reprieve from the cookie cutter motels that you can find everywhere. The innkeeper was a font of information and history. Among the other curious things about this in is that the office is open from 3 PM to 9 PM. He is outgoing, friendly, and enjoys spending time with the guests. I will definitely stay here again.

If you want a uniquely authentic BC rural experience filled with the history of this province ….…. You will really appreciate Hotel Ymir…. Also friendly helpful people clean and refurbished a few years ago. The Kootenays ….beautiful

This is a HOSTEL, not a hotel. There is a shared washroom. The rooms are only big enough for a bed. Our room was supposed to be 140sf with a queen bed. We had a double bed in a room that was smaller than 10 x10. Staff were super nice but stay away from this place.

This is a 127 year old property that was never fancy and is now run down and cluttered. It was a working-man’s hotel from the Gold Rush/ railroad days. The property is run down but clean.Eclectic and the thousands of pieces of art, antiques and pure junk may be of interest to some. Some fast food available at the store next door. Friendly staff. Steep and long wooden stairway to access rooms at second floor.

This is a historical building, filled with art work and curiosities. It is clean and comfortable. Because of its age, there is no elevator, so you'll need to be able to climb the stairs.

Ok, this place was SO fun. The staff is just terrific, and the property is quirky and full of interesting art. (Some of it quite lovely!) The room was clean, but the rest of the hotel is sadly not clean enough to consider eating there. We absolutely recommend it for inexpensive, fun accommodation, but be aware the common areas not up to todays hygiene standards.

If you're fussy about having a perfect hotel, this is not for you period but for us, we thought it was great. It's a very old hotel going up 2 dark old flights to stairs an older looking rooms, but the beds are clean.. It was actually amazing, the history and the art is very precious. The people are earthy and real And clever period Don't miss the amazing trails and the amazing beautiful river outside the hotel. No food around the town, so for breakfast, go to Salmo which is very close. Nelson..Fabulous

Worse than sleeping in the car.
Avoid. Hostel setting at best. I’ve actually stayed in far far nicer hostels. I don’t think I would stay again if it was free. Camping or sleeping in the car would have been a nicer/better experience.

This hotel is very unique and filled with art, artifacts and everything else you can image. Only down side was the so not serve dinner anymore so must travel to Salmo. There is a store next door that has everything including awesome coffee for the morning.

Disappointing
It's a nice art museum. Prior reviews mentioned the owner/proprietor, whom we never saw. At least one local family was in residence at the hotel. Lots of coming and going from the room next to ours. Signs said "Absolutely No Smoking in the Hotel!" But, cigarette smoke was in the hallways and also came into the room through the window. The lounges on each floor had dirty dishes piled up, food around, and the small fridge was packed with family food.

I am sorry that I cannot recommend Ymir hotel. While our room and bathroom were clean the rest of the place was not. I would not eat there if the food was free. This probably used to be an interesting place to stay but now the clutter and unsafe food practice is sad. There is only a convenience store for food . Buyer beware!

An experience I would recommend to anyone who loves history and is an eclectic art lover❤️ An old historic hotel from the late 1800's, located in a beautiful little mining town from years gone by. Nothing is new and everything tells a story, from the hundreds of pictures on the walls, to the old doll on the shelf or the vintage lamp in your room. There is even a couple dogs and handful of cats that visit with you throughout your stay. Beds were super comfy, bathrooms located outside your rooms, little kitchen room with daily snacks, and super friendly hotel staff. No elevator or tv in rooms; a truly unique experience for anyone wanting to stay somewhere different😊👍

Hotel Ymir (pronounced Y-mer) is in an old hotel from the mining era. The owner has populated the inside with art collected over his lifetime. You cannot fail to be moved by this collection which makes you realize in a new way that art matters. The location in the BC boonies is also evocative & the locals are charming.

This hotel holds so much charm. The staff are absolutely wonderful. The place is just overflowing with an awesome private art collection. I met Hans, the owner and he was really engaging knowing all the details of each piece. It was fascinating. We will definitely be back.

Great place to stay spent 2 nights to ski whitewater and red mountain. Checked in late due to car trouble and they were really understanding. Breakfast is a bit of a free for all with food being placed round the hotel but the place was so cheap that it was worth it.
