The best area to stay in Casteljau is directly along the banks of the Chassezac River, particularly near the Pont de Casteljau, for convenient access to outdoor activities and natural beauty.

This area is the heart of Casteljau's appeal, characterised by the river itself and the dramatic limestone cliffs that line its banks. The Pont de Casteljau is a key landmark, an old bridge that crosses the Chassezac, providing access to both sides of the river. The general layout is rural, with campgrounds and gîtes (holiday cottages) located amongst the trees and close to the water.

This location is superb for families looking for an active holiday. They can easily enjoy canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and paddleboarding directly from their accommodation. The riverbanks offer plenty of spots for picnics and relaxed afternoons, and many gîtes provide direct river access or are just a short stroll away.

Couples seeking a peaceful retreat will also find this area ideal. The natural surroundings offer opportunities for leisurely walks along the river, exploring the nearby woods, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty from a riverside terrace.

The best time to go to Casteljau is during the late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to early October) when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities and the crowds are smaller.

During late spring, the landscape is lush and green, and the temperatures are comfortable, typically ranging from 15°C to 25°C. This period is ideal for hiking, cycling, and exploring the natural beauty of the Ardèche Gorges without the intense summer heat. It's superb for couples looking for an active yet relaxed getaway, as you can enjoy the walking trails and river activities at a leisurely pace.

Early autumn also offers agreeable weather, with temperatures usually between 18°C and 25°C, and the vibrant colours of the changing leaves add to the scenery. The summer holiday crowds have dispersed, making it a more peaceful time to visit popular spots like the Pont d'Arc.
