Ce premier château prit le nom du fils de Guethenoc: Josselin. Le château fut ruiné, en 1168, par Henri II roi d'Angleterre. Eudes II de Porhoët avait épousé la fille du duc de Bretagne Connan III, Berthe de Bretagne. Par ce mariage, Eudes prétendit à la couronne ducale de Bretagne. Il se trouvait alors en concurrence avec Conan, fils issu du premier de Berthe avec Alain le Noir. Conan demanda l'aide des Anglais. Eudes II fut vaincu et le premier château de Josselin rasé. Il le fit reconstruire à partir de 1173. Josselin II, le fils aîné de Eudes II, hérita du château. Le deuxième fils, Alain, reçu la vicomté de Rohan et sera à l'origine de la maison de Rohan. Le château de Josselin passera par alliance et héritage aux maison de Fougères*, puis Lusignan. Par partages du comté de Porhoët en 1239 et 1240. Raoul III de Fougères obtient 2/3 du Porhoët y compris Josselin et son château. En 1256, à la mort de Raoul III, sa fille Jeanne de Fougères, épouse de Hugues XII* de Lusignan depuis 1254, hérite du domaine. Leur fils Hugues XIII de Lusignan succédera en 1270. Le 1er novembre 1303, à la mort de Hugues XIII de Lusignan, Guy de Lusignan, frère de Hugues, devient seigneur de Lusignan, comte de la Marche et d'angoulème, et vicomte de Porhoët. En 1307 ou 1308, Guy de Lusignan meurt célibataire et sans enfants. Le roi de France, Philippe le Bel, par cession de la soeur de Guy de Lusignan rachète les domaines. Le roi laissa cependant l'usufruit du château de Josselin à Yolande de Laval, la soeur de Guy. En 1370, le connétable de Clisson (Olivier V de Clisson) acheta le château au comte d'Alençon*. C'est le connétable de Clisson qui développera considérablement le château de 1370 à 1380, pour en faire une des plus formidable forteresse de Bretagne. Le château comptera alors neuf tours (dont quatre subsistent), et un énorme donjon (aujourd'hui disparu, démoli sur ordre de Richelieu). Le connétable de Clisson étant allié du roi de France, il s'opposera au duc de Bretagne Jean IV qui le fera prisonnier au château de l'Hermine. Le roi de France, Charles VI, finira par obtenir la libération du connétable. Les liens sentimentaux de Clisson avec Jeanne Holland*, la seconde femme du duc, expliquent peut-être en partie l'opposition du duc avec le connétable. En 1399, à la mort du duc de Bretagne Jean IV, le connétable de Clisson se trouvait, malade, à Josselin. Sa fille, la comtesse de Penthièvre était auprès de lui. Elle lui conseilla de profiter de la circonstance pour s'emparer des biens sequestré par le duc. L'honnête Clisson, "se mit en colère, et l'aurait tuée d'un pieu" si elle ne s'était sauvée à toute allure, se brisant la cuisse dans sa fuite, ce dont elle resta boîteuse. En 1407, à la mort du connétable, sa fille aînée, Béatrice, apportera le domaine de Josselin à son mari, Alain VIII de Rohan. En juillet 1440, Jean V, duc de Bretagne, résidait à Josselin. Gilles de Rais lui demanda audience pour se justifier d'accusations de mauvais traitements sur un clerc et de brigandage au détriment du trésorier de Bretagne. Plus tard, lors de son procès, Gilles de Rais confessera "que la dernière fois qu'il fut à Josselin (...) auprès du duc de Bretagne (...), il fit tuer plusieurs enfants (...) qu'il connut et exerca sur eux le vice et péché de Sodomie ...".* Jean II de Rohan ayant pris le parti français, le duc de Bretagne François II fit démanteler partiellement la forteresse en 1488. Jean II fera restaurer le château, de 1490 à 1505, et rajoutera la façade sur la cour d'honneur. Lors des "Guerres de Religion", Henri de Rohan*, propriétaire de Josselin, est du côté des insurgés protestants dont il est "le général en chef". Pour le punir Richelieu* fera abattre une grande partie des fortifications, ainsi que le donjon, en 1629. Aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, le château sera abandonné. Les tours de la première porte sont démolies en 1760. En 1776, le château abrite une filature destinée à venir en aide aux enfants pauvres. A la Révolution, le duc de Rohan n'ayant pas émigré, put conserver ses bien, dont Josselin. La restauration du château débutera vers 1855, sous la direction de l’architecte Juliot de la Morandière, élève de Viollet-le-Duc, sur les conseils de la duchesse de Berry qui avait visité Josselin, alors en ruine, en 1824. Le château est toujourts habité par la famille Rohan. Le château bénéficie d'aides de l'Etat, du Département du Morbihan et de la Région de Bretagne. . . . Les Porhoët avaient construit plusieurs châteaux: Dès 1025, Château-Trô en Mohon, au bord de l'Oust, puis Josselin, toujours au bord de l'Oust. Dès le XIIe siècle, Bodieuc, Lannouée. En mai 1239, Raoul III de Fougères hérite de son grand-père, Eudes III de Porhoët. Il devient donc théoriquement vicomte de Porhoët. Raoul détenait alors la plus importante force militaire du duché. Il devenait important pour Jean Ier duc de Bretagne de réduire cette puissance. Le duc utilisa deux atouts : D'une part, Raoul n'était pas le seul héritier d'Eudes III de Porhoêt, celui-ci ayant eu trois filles dont l'aînée était la mère de Raoul. Celui-ci ne devait donc obtenir que deux parts. D'autre part, une de ses tantes, Aliénor de Porhoët, était parente du duc Jean Ier. Finalement, pour obtenir son héritage, Raoul de Fougères fut contraint d'abandonner les fiefs normand des Porhoët et une grande part de la vicomté de son grand père. Il ne put porter le titre de vicomte de Porhoët. (Voir les réglement des conflits de succession dans la noblesse bretonne du XIIIe siècle par Frédéric Morvan - Annales de Bretagne 2009) Hugues XII de Lusignan mourut de la peste à la seconde croisade de Saint Louis, le 2 aout 1270 près de Tunis. Le 29 janvier 1254, Raoul III de Fougères avait marié sa fille unique, Jeanne de Fougères, à Hugues XII de Lusignan. Olivier V de Clisson dit le Connétable, est né le 23 avril 1336 au château de Clisson, et mort le 23 avril 1407 au château de Josselin. Fils d’Olivier IV de Clisson qui, soupçonné, par le roi de France Philippe VI de Valois, d'intrigue avec Edouard III d'Angletterre, sera décapité le 2 août 1343. Olivier V de Clisson est alors conduit par sa mère en Angleterre, il a douze ans. Il sera élevé à la cour d’Édouard III avec Jean de Montfort, le futur Jean IV. Son père, Olivier IV sera réhabilité en 1360 par Jean II le Bon et Olivier V de Clisson retrouvera ses droits en 1361. Il achète le château de Josselin à son cousin, le comte d’Alençon, en 1370. Il signera une charte établissant la suzeraineté du roi de France sur Josselin. Olivier V de Clisson deviendra connétable (commandant des armées du roi de France) à la mort de Bertrand Duguesclin, et perdra cette fonction en 1392. De son union avec Catherine de Laval, il aura deux filles; l'aînée, Béatrice (Béatrix) qui épousera Alain VIII de Rohan et Marguerite. Marguerite qui finira par se faire confisquer ses biens pour avoir pris en otage le duc de Bretagne Jean V, pour le compte des Penthièvre dont elle était proche par mariage. Olivier V de Clisson meurt à Josselin, à 71 ans, le 23 avril 1407. Jeanne Holland (Joan Holland), épouse de Jean IV de Bretagne, était, disait-on, la plus belle femme d'Angleterre. Son adultère avec Olivier V de Clisson, ami d'enfance de son mari, sera une cause de la brouille mortelle entre les deux hommes et peut-être du ralliement de Clisson au roi de France. Clisson se battra aux côtés de Du Guesclin. L'un des complices, Henriet, avoua que lors de son dernier voyage à Josselin avec Gilles de Rais, il en avait occis trois (enfants) de sa prope main. Gilles de Rais fut évidemment condamné avec ses complices, et pendu. Henri II de Rohan est élevé dans la religion réformée par sa famille. Il est un cousin germain d'Henri IV. En 1603, Henri IV fera ériger la vicomté de Rohan en duché-pairie. Henri de Rohan voyagera en Allemagne, en Grande-Bretagne, en Italie, aux Pays-Bas. Le roi d'Écosse, Jacques VI, lui demandera d'être le parrain de son fils. Fils qui deviendra Charles Ier d'Angleterre. Après l'assassinat de Henri IV, Il devient plus ou moins malgré lui le chef de la résistance protestante. Sa tête sera mise à prix après le siège de la Rochelle. Finalement, Rohan sera contraint à l'exil après la signature de la paix d'Alès en juin 1629, et il partira mettre ses talents militaires au service de la République de Venise. La paix d'Alès retire aux Réformés le droit aux assemblées politiques, et toutes leurs places fortes. Il finira par rentrer en grâce auprès de Louis XIII, il sera d'abord son ambassadeur extraordinaire, puis commandant des troupes royales. Il sera mortellement blessé, en 1638, aux côtés des troupes du duc de Saxe-Weimar alliées de la France contre les impériaux. En 1629, la famille Rohan, convertie au protestantisme sous l'influence de Marguerite de Navarre, s'oppose au pouvoir royal. Pour punir Henri de Rohan, le cardinal de Richelieu ordonne le démantèlement du château et fait démolir le donjon, ainsi que trois tours.
