Bozeman

Travel Guide

A city of tree-lined streets and wild deer that grants access to the natural beauty and picturesque scenery of Montana’s Gallatin mountain range.

Experience the quiet charm of Bozeman, a small city surrounded by the natural beauty of Big Sky Country. Since it was founded by John M. Bozeman in 1864, the city has developed a rich cultural heritage, with festivals, museums and galleries making up much of the downtown area. Use Bozeman as a base for adventure hikes and skiing in surrounding national parks.

Bozeman lies in the south of Montana not far from the border with Wyoming and is known for its proximity to national parks, including the Gallatin National Forest. Fly into the small airport nearby or rent a car and drive. The nearest big cities accessible by road are Salt Lake City in Utah, just over 400 miles (650 kilometers) south and Spokane Washington 400 miles (650 kilometers) to the north west.

Enjoy the city’s urban delights with a visit to the Montana State University and it’s impressive Americana design. While there, discover the Museum of the Rockies, which features dinosaur fossils and geological displays.

Browse galleries and see shows in theaters downtown. Experience cultural celebrations year-round. Visit the American Indian Pow Wow festival held annually in April or catch some cowboy action at the Bozeman Rodeo held in August.

Use Bozeman as a base for adventure activities throughout the year. In summer, head to the Gallatin National Forest for the region’s best hiking trails. See the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area, which has jagged mountains rising out of lush national forest and opportunities for fishing and rafting. For a challenging hike, try a multi-day walk across the stunning Gallatin divide.

In winter, try any of the region’s exciting snowmobile trails and tours or rent skis and take to the mountains. The Bridger Bowl ski area is a short drive northwest of the city, while Moonlight basin and Big Sky ski resort are further south. Purchase the Lone Peak Pass for seasonal access to all three mountains. Contact the Bozeman Ranger District for maps and important information before heading into national forests.

At the end of a day head downtown and share a drink with the friendly mix of artists, ranchers and students who inhabit this charming city.

Cute Place
"This is a cute place with lots of character. We enjoyed the location as we were able to walk to several local hot spots. But keep in mind it is downtown with bars across the street, so there is street noise until after 2:00. This would be a great place to stay during football season!"
