Spectacular view - could use some upkeep
This was possibly the most beautiful view I have ever seen - but some of the other things made the stay not so perfect. The pool was filthy- and when I emailed her about it she did say I could leave for a refund - but we had no where else booked so that would have been a little tough. There were other things as well, turned over pots in the yard, children’s toys in the yard, screens broke or missing all together, faucet in the kitchen very lose, grill didn’t work, just basic maintenance upkeep not done. Another thing which was totally not their fault, just annoying, they were working on the road - so while we were trying to relax you heard the beep beep beep of machinery. Beds were very comfortable which was a big plus!

A glimpse of heaven
Once you get up the rather treacherous road, all your worries just melt away. This property really is a little piece of heaven on earth. We had some guests that needed help driving up the hill, but most of us made it on our own. Justin and Crystal were very helpful both before the trip and during. We turned this setting into a venue for our small wedding for an extra fee, and it was an amazing decision! Our guests proclaimed that it was the most beautiful wedding they had ever been to. Crystal’s whole family was there and helped us with the heavy lifting of arranging the farm tables and setting up the chairs. It was a seamless event that will be remembered forever. Thank you for sharing your lovely piece of heaven with us!

The view! Oh my- what a view! It was constantly changing with the marine layer. We loved the pool and the hot tub and used the fireplace every night. We slept like babies on the cozy beds. Our family loved this property… our grown children and their little ones, all enjoyed the houses, ocean view, pool, hot tub, homemade lemonade, hiking up and down the driveway and enjoying the nearby state parks. Stunning Views/Location - Home Just OK
We booked this rental for my daughter’s wedding. The gorgeous views were exactly as we had hoped. You get the woodsy side of Big Sur from one angle, and wide-open ocean views from another. We were in awe of both. This is an absolutely beautiful backdrop for any special event. June is chilly and often overcast, with speckles of sunshine. Now, for the houses on the property, they are just okay. Seemed clean for the most part but the build, exterior/interior and furnishings do not match the price point of the rental cost. I would say they are mountain-cabin-like in look and feel. If the views/surroundings weren’t so spectacular, I would have been very disappointed. Not what I expected. My daughter and new husband stayed two nights (we lodged elsewhere). On the plus side, both thought the bed/bedding were very comfortable but overall the homes are not well-kept. For those preparing for a wedding, expectations are pretty important, and that is the reason for sharing these specifics. The 2nd story house had only one small mirror, which made getting ready for the ceremony very challenging, but we made it work. We booked Chef Jesse for the wedding dinner. He was very organized, prepared and easy to communicate with from start to finish. He also helped with a small wedding cake on short notice, which turned out pretty cute. Great Visit
We had an incredible stay this past Memorial Day weekend, even despite some electric power challenges. A perfect space for our group of 10. A great location for getting away from the crowds camping in Big Sur but still close enough to get to some great hikes up the Coast. The property manager was great in helping answer questions. We hope to make it back some day!

You’re renting the view, the house is just so-so
The view, the pool, the hot tub and even the vibe, are just what you think you’re getting when you rent this property, and they’re all great. But the house is in need of some upkeep and the road, which is doable when it’s dry, is pretty scary when it’s wet. It is steep, narrow, and rutted with sharp turns. We were lucky and got in and out on dryish days but even so we left our 2WD car at the bottom. Just be aware and bring an appropriate vehicle. As for the house, it’s not bad, but for the price you would expect it to be kept up a bit better. And given that you really must plan to do all of your cooking there, you would expect to have a fully functioning kitchen with lids for the pans, knives that are sharp and a stove that is fully functional. These are all easily fixable and I hope they do make those improvements so that the price matches the property condition.

3rd time staying! Heaven on Earth!
We love coming back to this oasis along the Big Sur coastline. Truly one of a kind experience even when it rained most of our trip. Nestled up to the fire, saw a bobcat on a hike around the property. Jumped in hot tub as it was raining. Just amazing place to detox from the hustle bustle of life.

Gorgeous
Our wedding party stayed here for a weekend. The whole experience was delightful, the pictures do not do the place justice. It’s more spacious than the pictures looked, and the sweeping views of the Big Sur coastline.. just STUNNING. We were literally above the clouds The driveway can be a bit tricky to find and drive up especially at night but it was so worth it. David was so helpful and we’d definitely recommend this place 10/10

Amazing place!!
This property was amazing. We checked in during a rare September rainstorm but that didn't deter our time. The weather cleared for my birthday and couldn't be happier. We only used the main house and only one bedroom so the cleaning fee was rather steep. Also we asked for a little extra time on check out by 30+ mins and it was not granted. We had two dogs and my GF had a broken wrist. But overall don't expect fancy amenities like the reviews have stated and the wifi works fine if that's a concern for you. We would definitely stay there again.

Location location location
We didn't have time for a long trip but were looking for something special and memorable for a family celebration. This was perfect. The afternoon we arrived we watched numerous mom and baby whales from the front lawn. The next morning we arose to find ourselves on an island in a sea of fog. The pool drew all of us in for frequent swims, and stargazing from the hot tub was a fabulous way to end our days. Justin and David were both great about answering questions and responding to during visit requests. The beds and linens were also top notch. Responding to comments about the road in- I am a nervous traveler and was glad another family member was driving on the way in and out. We all made it fine in our two wheel drive cars, and David meeting each car to lead us up the hill was super helpful. We were glad we decided to skip going out to dinner because none of us really wanted to worry about navigating in after dark. Wildlife- besides the whales we enjoyed a early visit from a small coyote down by the pool. He was not interested in getting any closer. We also had a larger night visitor with paws the size of my hand sporting very pointy claws at the end of each print along the hood and roof of the car. They knocked over a trash can during the night, but did not cause any other trouble. All in all a beautiful, relaxing and memorable vacation. We would definitely consider visiting here again.

Breathtaking views!
We stayed on this beautiful ranch property for two days - wish it was much longer! It has the most breathtaking, panoramic views of the ocean, and a large grassy yard! Perfect for our dog to play. A perfect wedding venue!
The property is absolutely breathtaking, somehow even better than the photos. We (a party of 6) stayed for 4 nights and my husband and I had our wedding ceremony there one of the days of our stay. It is truly a magical spot! Zoe was incredibly helpful and communicative with all the details leading up to our stay and David was equally helpful during our stay. We had a few hiccups with the power during our stay (to be expected when off grid like this property is) but David was around to help get things back up and running. We especially loved going up to see the chickens and getting fresh eggs for breakfast every morning, and watching the sunset from the hot tub! We will absolutely be back next time we are in Big Sur.

Just out of the world experience to have anywhere none less in remoteness of Big Sur. Huge 10 foot deep pool, internet coverage on entire property, solar powered, 1 hour to heat entire hot tub. Just killer experience and can’t wait to visit again.

This was the most magical trip to Big Sur ever! The pool and outdoor kitchen were incredible and the house could not have been more charming. The weather was perfect to be able to swim in both the hot tub and the pool. And the host was super accommodating and helpful We will definitely be back.

This property has an absolutely superlative location and view . Combine this with a beautiful infinity pool and hot tub in the clouds and you are literally on top of the world, with a view of the Pacific Ocean that is beyond description. This is a "Green" property that is heavily reliant on solar, which means that adjustments might be required when using energy." Jason, the on-site manager worked very hard to accommodate our needs and provided an unforgettable musical event under the stars.

Thanks for staying with us and even opting last minute to extend your stay for a third night. I’m a little confused by your review, we do have an onsite caretaker, named David. We do also have a backup generator that provides all necessary extra power as need with the a literal press of a button. No adjustments needed besides that. Thanks either way for your feedback and hope to host you again. For future guest: Yes you may need to turn on the generator if needed. As advertised, we are off-grid. :)

Amazing views, awesome property!
The property has all you need for a comfortable stay as long as you know that there is no cell service, slow wifi and no dishwasher. It’s a peaceful place with the most beautiful views of the ocean and coast. Fresh eggs and fruits from the garden. So relaxing, with hot spa+pool too. David lives close by and checks on you if there is any isssue. A pure jewel of a place.

Love Big Sur!
Loved everything about this place, but it's not for everyone. It is remote! The drive up the canyon the first time is literally breathtaking but you are guided the whole way. We had a non-4 wheel drive expedition and it was fine. The property is absolutely spectacular!! We loved every piece of it! Stayed here with our immediate family of 7 including 5 kids aged 22 (turned 23 here) to 14. The first night we used the pizza oven and David helped us with fire supplies, but we did not give ourselves enough time to get the oven to temp before dark so we finished the last few in the oven. Our mistake. The property is so relaxing and beautiful! Had farm fresh eggs for breakfast and even saw some real wildlife! Sadly, the restaurant just below the canyon had a devastating fire days before we arrived. We chose not to drive Big Sur at night so the next day we had a spectacular late birthday lunch for our son at Nepenthe about 20 miles north. There was a wait but ample seating with a view and a drink to pass the time. Dinner was charcuterie and hot dogs with a few rounds of Euchre. The afternoon was spent at the pool. The pool guy arrived and asked if he could clean the pool and we all happily retreated to the hot tub. This was probably the best 30 minutes of our entire trip! We initiated a conversation with him and it was enlightening! He lives off the grid up a canyon with his family. We talked about living off the grid and school for his kids in the age of Covid - he's a great guy and we learned a lot! It was eye-opening in the best way! You are on solar power with a generator backup. Internet is fine, just not quick. We were there on non-sunny days and with the forest fires from the north impeding the sunlight. As a result the batteries did not charge completely. No worries - there is a generator. Yes, you need to refill it, but that is a minor inconvenience. But if you want 4 seasons perfection, this is not the place for you. We love 4 seasons, but also appreciated living pseudo-"off the grid" Would come back here in a heartbeat!! If I stayed here again (and I would except we live so far away), I would probably hire the chef for one night. We loved everything about the property but we like to have a glass of wine with dinner and now that Lucia Lodge has burned down there are no local options.

Excellent Place for an Anniversary Weekend!!
We had an amazing stay at Morning Glory Ranch. When we were first checking in Justin let us know that the hot tub was not working but that they had someone coming to take a look. We were only there for an hour or so when Dominic showed up fixed the hot tub and cleaned the pool as well! We did find out when we got to the property that the main propane generator for the property was out of service but they did have a gas powered generator that was there at worked great. The only additional impact was gassing up the generator once a day which did not impact our trip at all. I can’t say enough about how amazing the location was at the top of the hill with the pool and hot tub overlooking the ocean. We really enjoyed our time there and the highlight of our entire trip was Chef Jesse McClelland. He cooked us an amazing four course meal and the sommelier he worked with did a wonderful job of matching each of our different dishes in each course with excellent wine. Among our favorites were the Arancini with smoked Meyer lemon & truffle oil, the Ahi Tuna Poki, and our main dishes of Lobster Rissotto, and Dukkah Crusted Lamb. Everything was prepared and cooked to perfection and I can easily say it was the best meal that my wife and I have ever enjoyed together. Chef Jesse also prepared an awesome breakfast the next morning of breakfast sliders and a lox plate that were to die for, along with a killer Charcutarie board for lunch. Regardless of the excellent cooking Chef Jesse was so personable and easy to work with. His professional yet approachable demeanor lends itself to my recommendation that if you book this property and not Chef Jesse you really have missed out on an amazing opportunity. We also booked Dominique for a massage while we were at the property and she provided fantastic service. She did a very good job of identifying exactly what we needed in our massages and even went so far as to give us a gift box to make our trip more special! All in all what started as a questionable property turned out to be the best trip we could have hoped for. I definitely recommend a stay a Morning Glory Ranch and I know that my wife and I both appreciate the fast and attentive interactions with the host Justin.

While the location of this house is really nice they need to tighten up many aspects. While Matt and Jade were responsive they could not get the hot tub working, the pool needed to be skimmed, how to turn on the stove and over needed to be explained, the electrical system needed to be explained as well. While they did give me some money back, I would much rather they just made sure everything was working and the place was ready for us. My 2 cents.

Thanks for your review! For Future Guests: We are off-grid and thus not your average home. We run on generators and solar power and attention to this fact is required for our guests. We do provided detailed operational notes in the cabins, as well as offer on-call help for any operational issues. We've had some bad luck with the hot tub lately, and we're glad to say it's back up and running without issues. Given our remote location we cannot always get service providers on-site immediately. We always do everything in our capacity to provide you with the best experience possible. Thanks Steve for giving us a try and trust the refund made the hot tub inconvenience forgivable. Cheers!

Lack of upkeep on property led us to leave immediately
Overall, the pool house / studio option seems like a good deal, but the combined pool house / cabin is not close to being worth it given lack of upkeep (e.g., overpowering smell of mold). Full disclosure - we left after about 1 hr on the property due to issues encountered and the host did the right thing by refunding the full amount. I am writing the review to ensure these issues are documented / corrected and that others can make an informed decision about whether to rent the property. First the positives: - the view is amazing - as good as the pictures - Mat - the caretaker - is nice and helpful - pool temp was very warm (felt around 80) powered by a large and impressive solar heating system Issues we encountered: 1. As noted above, there was an overpowering smell of mold in the first floor emanating from the kitchen sink / kitchen floor due to what appears to have been an extensive (and possibly ongoing) leak. The kitchen drain is propped up by a rock, which worried me that there were other short cuts taken in the construction / upkeep of the building. 2. There was only 1 working smoke detector, no carbon monoxide detectors. The downstairs smoke detector on the first floor of the main house was inoperable and there was no smoke detector in the downstairs bedroom or the hallway leading to the bedroom. 3. The utility closet on the first floor that housed the water heater had a very strong smell of propane (the fuel used to operate the heating unit). It did not seem to have proper ventilation. 4. The pool is not covered and didn't seem to be cleaned regularly. There was quite a bit of dirt / debris in it. We own a pool and it's not hard to keep it clean (cover + vacuum). At a that price point, I expect the pool to be pristine. 5. There were quite a few unsightly things on the property - e.g., old pool drainage unit was just laying around, there was a random storage unit covered with a tarp Also - the road to the property is dirt/gravel, very narrow (1 vehicle only and tight) and steep. 4wd is an absolute must.

Thanks for you feedback. For future guests: we have added ventilation to the heater closet, repaired kitchen sink and replaced sink cabinet, added smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in both units, and cleaned up old pool drainage units. Our pool is clean 2x a week and given it’s size and one of a kind shape, a pool cover is not possible. As advertised, our driveway is a narrow dirt road, however 4wheel drive is NOT required in dry weather. Many of our staff drive small sedans without any issue. We do escort all of our guests to the property upon check-in to ensure folks arrive safe and sound. We also have on-call support for all off grid operation.

This place offers an absolutely stunning view. But, we were not aware that we would rely on generator power, which failed two nights in a row. The primary generator was already broken down before we arrived. The backup generator failed both nights, the first night because it ran out of gas, second night probably because of lack of oil. When the power failed, an alarm repeatedly sounded every minute or so, which made sleep impossible. Visitors should be aware that a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the steep, winding climb. There is one turn that is borderline treacherous, then again it's normal for Big Sur locals for what it's worth. Finally, we paid a premium for two nights, yet pool cleaning was scheduled during our second afternoon/evening, which prevented us from using the pool for a significant amount of time.

Tranquil and Stunning Property
We booked this for a special get away with our late teen/adult children, their friends and our family. It was magnificent. The views are amazing, the pools and hot tub and house amenities are perfect. The property managers are incredibly responsive and were quickly available to address any questions or issues that arose. We arranged for a private chef - Chef Jesse McClelland - and I would HIGHLY recommend him! Best meal we had our entire trip and one of the best we have ever enjoyed. It was so fun and easy to work with him to arrange a menu that met our needs - vegetarians, one with no cheese and one picky eater. He was flexible, communicated well, cooked an amazing meal and cleaned the place spotless on his departure. Outstanding! We also booked massages with Moni and Izzy. They came to the house and did back to back massages in groups of 2 for our entire group. It was a wonderful and relaxing treat to compliment this beautiful location. Would highly recommend this property!

Amazing Big Sur Getaway
Morning Glory Ranch is an amazing, off-grid experience in Big Sur. Communication with the property manager is excellent. We have stayed at the property several times now and are always blown away by the amazing view and the cozy home. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you will need to cook meals during your stay. For an off-grid property, the amenities are extraordinary. From the hot tub and infinity pool to the washer and dryer and full kitchen. The hammock on the porch is one of the most amazing places to relax and enjoy the quiet of Big Sur, and the stargazing is unparalleled. There is so much to love about this property.

A lot of promise, but not a well-maintained property
I booked this property for a Mother's Day trip with family (6 adults and three kids under the age of five). The host was great about communicating where to meet and escorting us to the ranch, since the property is located off a small dirt road and there's no cell service in the area. The grounds, which include a sprawling lawn and infinity pool, were as beautiful as pictured. However, the cabin and pool house (where you and your guests actually stay) were not well maintained and did not appear to have been cleaned before our arrival (or if they were cleaned, they had been cleaned some time before). There were several spiders in each of the bedrooms and bathrooms, holes in the window screens (some windows did not have any screens at all), and overall seemed musty. For the nightly rental price of this property, this was pretty surprising. The same could be said for the pool. There was literally a dead mouse floating in it when we tried getting in (I could excuse the bugs as impossible to keep out, but a mouse?!). I understand that it's a cabin and in a remote area, and that there are bound to be bugs and critters around, but it really did not seem like much attention had been given to it prior to us checking in. When there are four spiders in one bedroom, I doubt they all moved in the night before. It wasn't all bad. The host was lovely enough and left us fresh eggs from the chickens (you can also go visit the coop, which the kids really enjoyed). There was a hammock you could lay in to enjoy the sunset, and the hot tub worked great. I only wish that some more care had been given to the lodgings. For the price that we paid, I don't think that was unreasonable.

Fantastic location.
This property has a commanding view of the ocean and surrounding mountains. It also has a very large lawn and at the far end is a lovely swimming pool and hot tub. The improvements are solar powered, so a generator comes on at night to charge the batteries. When we were there, the weather and the road was dry. The road is easily navigated with an SUV in that dry condition. (Jade, the caretaker, drove the road in a small 2WD sedan with no problem.) Jade was very responsive and we felt well taken care of. We especially enjoyed laying on the grass on the blankets during the days and sitting in the hot tub at night watching the stars.

Absolute Paradise
The pictures do not even come close to capturing the stunning location this home sits on. You'd be hard pressed to find another spot ANYWHERE to match it. Here is some feedback on our stay: First of all the drive up the mountain was super easy. Many of the reviews warned of some treacherous road. Whereas I agree at night or in rainy conditions it could be a bit sketchy, but during a sunny day it is simple. Second, the pool and hot tub are amazing. The hot tub is nice and hot ~ 103 degrees. The jets do not work. The pool is freezing. It was about 60 degrees and heating it is not an option. Our kids brought their wetsuits and had a blast. The house is very basic and met all of our needs. The kitchen was pretty well stocked with all the amenities needed. There is no microwave or dishwasher and I recommend bringing at least 1 sharp knife. Thankfully we had amazing weather and spent very little time inside. Cell phones do not work at all, however the WiFi worked great so we were able to text and Facetime with anyone that had an iPhone with no issues at all. The property the house sits on is huge and beautiful. We had so much fun running around and playing in the yard and our dogs literally thought they died and had gone to heaven. The property manager, Jade was great. Any time we had a question we just text her and she responded immediately. Overall, one of the best vacations we have ever had and would love to return to this amazing property!

Incredible Views
The views from this property are truly unbelievable. It is a bit of a scary drive up the hill, but once you're there, it makes it all worth it. Once you're there, plan to stay put and make yourselves at home! We were able to use the brick oven fireplace for homemade pizzas and the kids loved the spa at night looking at the stars. There were a few amenities in the kitchen that didn't quite work, but the view more than made up for any shortcomings inside. It's a place we'll never forget!

It was amazing watching the ocean change during the day and watching the stars at night. When you live in a populated area you forget how many stars are actually in the sky. The bed was comfortable with nice linens. The kitchen was adequately stocked. There was no microwave which we were able to work around in most instances. We would consider coming back to this property.

I'd like to thank David for letting us stay at his beautiful place. I brought three generations with me grandkids, kids, and grandparents ranging from 4 to 70 and we all had a great time here. We had 9 people total and all slept comfortably. The main cabin had two rooms, a master bedroom with a queen bed and a bathroom and a second bedroom downstairs with a queen and a bunk bed. The second cabin has two full beds and a futon. Each with full kitchens. The epic views are unbeatable to say the least. This property has 35 acres and we were able to explore lots of it. There was a chicken coop where we picked up fresh eggs in the morning, lemon and apple trees to pick from too! The pool was well maintained and was heated to 70 degrees and the jacuzzi could heat up to 103. The gas grill was clean and ready and easy to use. They even had a wood burning pizza oven that we didn't have a chance to utilize. The wifi is good enough to get things done but not too fast so turn off all your back up apps and tell your friends and family to do the same or else it will slow down too much. There is no cellphone service for Verizon, sprint or at&t and this was the case for most of the Pacific coast highway. It's definitely a place to unplug and get away. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you need to cook and serve. You definitely need to bring a full grocery list as there are no real markets for miles and miles and they don't offer much. We had a full moon during our stay but even with that the help of a flashlight was needed which were available by the property owner but I recommend bringing your own. Headlamps are the best. A few things on the property didn't work, the patio heaters were out of order, it would have been nice to have for the cold nights down by the pool for the people who weren't in the hot tub. Also the pool was heated to 70F which was a little chilly, the property owner said it would go to 80 but it didn't. When you're paying $1400 a night you want everything to work right? The property sits right off the pch and it's a steep drive to get up there. A long steep and twisty road to the top is a mini adventure, take it nice and slow and you'll be fine, I could see how some would get nervous especially with the wrong vehicle. We followed the property manager up with his camry and we had 2 wheel drive SUVs and made it up just fine. I recommend a 4x4 drive in wet conditions. Over all I would come back here 100% it's an exclusive experience

Absolutely perfect
The entire stay could not have been better. Private and open at the same time. A beautiful pool that’s always sunny even when the fog rolls in because you’re literally above the clouds. And when it’s the clear, it’s one of the most amazing views ever — we even saw dolphins swimming on our first day there. The house itself is cozy and comfortable too with everything that you need. It’s “off the grid” so some things are a little quirky but it adds to the charm. Honestly, we wouldn’t have changed anything. We hope to be back soon! Thanks again!

Paradise

I would go back there 100 times
I am so impressed with this property, location, quality of service, and everything. It was 8 of us who stayed there for two nights. We truly enjoyed our time there. The owner and property managers were very kind and responsive. Because the place is literally off the grid they kept checking on us every day to make sure we have everything we need. The place was clean. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and would go back there as much as I can. Thank you guys for your hospitality.
