Amazing views in off-grid modern retreat surrounded by open land

Come visit the wild side --the east side of the Sierra Nevada. You can drive to this destination from the Los Angeles or San Francisco Bay area within a half day! Dutch Pete's is a stand-alone off-grid home, powered by solar panels and a back-up generator in the Adobe Valley. The compound sits at the edge of the meadow, close to the site where the stage coaches stopped to rest in the late 1800s. Nevada's highest peaks, Boundary and Montgomery, hovering around 13,000 feet, a good 8,000 plus feet above the great alluvial fans above the Benton valley, are uniquely framed by the Benton Crags. Dutch Pete's is a wonderful, rural jumping off place, from which to explore the Eastern Sierra. It is conveniently located about 45 minutes from Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, and Lee Vining at Mono Lake. At the north end of the Adobe Valley, wild horses roam. Our guests are able to roam the 160 acres on foot. Cows can be found grazing during the non-winter months. to reveal salt deposits. Black Lake's alkaline waters nurture microbial life including bright purple bacteria. There are larval treats for migrating birds. It has a border of lush salt grass; this aquatic pasture is visited by a herd of wild mustangs. In spring and summer range cattle, birds and birdwatchers are in harmony with the tranquility. This 500+ acre parcel was recently donated to the Eastern Sierra Land Trust for conservation purposes.

Visitors will find serenity in this high desert oasis. The nearest towns are Mammoth Lakes, 40-50 minutes to the southwest, Bishop 40 minutes south, June Lake and Lee Vining, each about 60 minutes drive to the northwest, Tioga Pass of Yosemite National Park just 20 minutes beyond. Death Valley and Las Vegas are four to six hours away, respectively. The Mammoth Lakes Airport is about ten minutes closer than Mammoth Lakes. The ghost town of Benton Hot Springs, really a historic and active settlement of 13 persons and its sister-ville Benton, population 400, are 5 and 10 minutes South. Lunch, dinner, drinks, basic groceries, gasoline and pay phone can be purchased at Benton Station, in Benton, six miles to the south.

We celebrate the proximity to our neighbor, a rustic gem, the Inn at Benton Hot Springs, and if travelling as a larger group, we recommend renting rooms there as well, as their rooms (or tub sites) come with a natural hot spring tub. As a renter of Dutch Pete's Ranch, under management of the Inn at Benton Hot Springs, you will have a designated hot tub available to you during your stay.

Summer can bring dry, hot sunny days with occassional afternoon thunderstorms, with evening temperature falling in to the 50s. Sunrises and alpenglows are spectacularly colorful.

Second visit; incredible both times
My husband and I stayed at Dutch Pete's Ranch twice this year- over Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. We enjoyed the house and property immensely during both visits. The solitude and quiet is a treat; the house has everything you'd need for a long weekend, and the beauty of the surroundings never gets old. Along with hours of relaxing at the house and hiking nearby, we used our 4x4 truck to explore the thousands of acres of wildlife nearby. Highlights included seeing herds of wild horses, finding natural hot and cold springs, and visiting Bodie ghost town. We were pleasantly surprised to see yellow blooms all over the valley and surrounding the house in early September- a color that wasn't present during our visit in late May. We will definitely book again; looking forward to seeing how the area changes with a bit of snow.

An escape to treasure
In October of 2011, I had the good fortune to stay at Dutch Pete’s Ranch outside Benton Springs. It is 2 months after the fact now, and I am still struggling to find words to describe how wonderful my week was. The house is beautiful and in a setting that is breath-taking. The quiet that surrounds the remoteness of the property and the blackness that engulfs the night makes it a true paradise away from civilization. The amenities in the house are very modern, eco-friendly, and comfortable so there is no feeling of rustic living once inside this fancy oasis. There is lots of room in this spotless home to settle in and make it your own. The location for me and my purposes was excellent. I hiked in the Mammoth Lakes area, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, the Rock Creek area, and the east side of Yosemite and enjoyed the drive from the Ranch through the Owens Valley every day. The commute to trailheads filled me with anticipation and the return drive back to Dutch Pete’s Ranch punctuated perfect days on the trail. If you have the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful home in this spectacular setting, it will be an escape you will treasure.

Right Time Year!!!
What can one say, but WOW! This is definitely one of the most tranquil and serine locations that I have ever experienced. The views are majestic, the house is exceptional and the surroundings make for a unique environment which allows you to truly relax. The owners description of this property is spot on. Understand that everything from the drive in, to the calm mornings light, to the homes amenities will quickly lull you into wishing you had more than a weeks time to spend here. Phones don't ring, because there is little access to even cellular service, and there is not another house or person to be seen. If you are looking to get away to paradise and let the world you know dissolve away, then consider even a short 3 to 4 day stay in this beautiful casa.
