THE GOOD: 눇It's a beautiful property, and it's fun to stay in an old fort with such character. The staff was amazing, the WiFi is fast, parking is easy, and the breakfast buffet was excellent.
THE BAD: In the older building where I stayed, there was no lift; it wasn't easy to lug my 50-pound suitcase up those stairs. The staff left me a fruit tray in my room--a nice gesture, but I honestly have no idea how long it had been there, and in the heat the entire room reeked of fruit. The bathroom window could not be completely shut and there was no screen, so my room had several flying insects in it. The bed was stiff and rickety. Also, the hotel is on a hill. Walking to town is pretty easy because it's mostly downhill, but walking back up is a little strenuous. There is a "bar" but it's not continually staffed--the bartender also works in the restaurant across the way. There is a pool but it was not heated. I could have forgiven all of these things, but not this one: the water heater took up to 10 minutes to warm the water. I was told this is "normal" because the heater is on the other side of the property, and if you were the first one to shower in the morning (or late in the evening), you had to wait. I gave up on two occasions trying to take a shower because I was in a hurry. There must be better hotels to stay in Angra, but be sure to walk around the fort property because it's a sight by itself.
