“I'd definitely stay there again.”

Super location. All the activities/venues we wanted to take in were within walking distance from the Varscona. Complimentary continental breakfast was quite adequate. After the day's activities coming back to the hotel and relaxing with complimentary wine and cheese in the hospitality suite was most enjoyable. Appreciated the valet service very much and the vehicle was ready for us every time we requested it. Room decor is rather dated but who really cares when your eyes are closed.

“Great stay”

Although this hotel could do with a facelift it is still our hotel of choice in Edmonton. It is right on Whyte and connected to a great Irish pub.

“Needs a spruce up.”

My husband and I have been staying at the Varscona since it opened years ago. When it first opened, it's decor was current. The finishings a little nicer than the average hotel. We have come to realize that the Varscona now desperately needs a redo and update. It doesn't measure up to the other newer hotels in the area. Ex. Holiday Inn Express or the newer Best Western (St. Albert) The level of hospitality they are trying to deliver is now lost due to the property being run down. Our room needed to be repainted. The bath door needed to be replaced. The bath fixtures worked, but that's all you could say about them. The room decor is dated, like back to the early 90's. The bathtub's glaze is so worn that it obviously cannot be cleaned to a sparkling condition anymore. The room was however very clean. The mattress was comfy. We love the neighborhood and that is why we have stayed here for so many years. But I think from now on we will pick from the newer nicer hotels near south common.

Area recommendations

Stay near the South Common. Has plenty of shopping, restaurants,hotels, and is near enough to Whyte Ave. and the International Airport.

“Excellent AffordableHotel-Great Service”

We just came back from a great stay at the Varscona. We loved the Saturday night wine tasting, and had a great clean room. The hotel is very convenient to all shops on Whyte Ave. The valet's brought our car around really fast when we requested it. We also feel like this is a safe area. The free wi-fi and deluxe contintental breakfast was great too. We will definately be back soon. Thanks Varscona!

“Excellent Hote;”

We have stayed at the Varscona several times when visting Edmonton for the Fringe Festival. The location, valet parking and wine & cheese make it perfect for our Fringing experience. The staff are always very professional and accomodating and the rates for a boutique hotel in the heart of the action are excellent. We plan on staying at the Varscona next year when we visti the Fringe.

Area recommendations

The Strathcona area of Edmonton is an older funky neighbourhood with access to some excellent restaurants, theatres and the ever popular Strahcona Farmer's Market.

Events and shows

If you are a theatre lover I encourage you to visit Edmonton for the Fringe Festival in August. It is 10 days of very unusal stage presentations. This is certainly not main stage theatre as it is theatre on the extreme edge or on the finge if you like. There are excellent street acts and plays for children that will introduce them to a world that no digital device can provide.

“Stay every year and will continue.”

We have been staying here for the last 10 or 12 years while attending the Fringe. We find the hotel comfortable with a great lococation. This year we did notice that it is starting to show it's age. They are in the process of replacing the windows so hopefully the carpets will be next. The complimentary breakfast is good and we do enjoy the wine and cheese at 5 PM.

“Great Location”

Stayed for 4 nights at this hotel in Old Strathcona. Great location, plenty of good restaurants in the neighbourhood, and easy access to all the other areas of Edmonton.
